Com a falta de uso o castelo foi-se degradando. Recentemente foi recuperado e classificado como Monumento Nacional. É também considerado Patrimônio Mundial pela UNESCO. Um lugar cheio de história e que foi berço de Portugal. Não é à toa que em um pedaço da muralha original tem os dizeres “Aqui nasceu Portugal”. The Castle of Guimarães began with a monastery built by Mumadona Dias in the 10th century, before, therefore, the formation of Portugal. As the attacks of the Moors were frequent they decided to build a wall to protect the community and the monks that lived inside. It was this fort that gave origin to the Castle of Guimarães. Later, in the twelfth century, it was in this castle that Dom Afonso Henriques was born. Some years after he would become the first king of Portugal. With the lack of use the castle was degrading. Recently it was recovered and classified as National Monument. It is also considered World Heritage by UNESCO. A place full of history and that was cradle of Portugal. It is no wonder that in a piece of the original wall has the words "Here was born Portugal".

Incredibly beautiful, restored ancient property; rooms are palatial and the design is impeccable. The AC didn't work while we were there but we survived with a giant fan that the hotel offered us!

Great small hotel

Super large room with equally large bed which was very comfortable. Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent breakfast. Very easy to get to all the sights and close to parking. Could find no fault and would stay again and highly recommend

What a fabulous hotel. The staff couldn't do enough for us. The room was stunning and spacious and we had a great view of the pool and garden (Room Monte Carlo). A great choice for breakfast of pastries fruit, yoghurt, meats,cheeses, etc. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

An 1827 home lovingly restored to a luxury hotel. It's amazing. Photographs throughout the hotel showing the before and during restoration. Very cool. The staff can't do enough for you. Five minute walk from the old square and the parking is up the street and easy to get to. Highly recommend staying here.

Excellent facility with a 2 star Michelin Chef. Dinner at the hotel restaurant is a must. Reservations strongly recommended. The hotel still has the Conquistador Palace name locally. The pool and patio area is a great way to finish the day. The location is also perfect. Close to everything. The best way to see the town is get a ride to the top of the hill and then walk down weaving your way through the streets in town. There are good restaurants all over. This hotel is exceptional. Highly recommend.

Beautiful building with exceptionally good staff.

The hotel is beautiful and truly reflects the style of a palace, with very high ceilings, grand double doors to the suites and very high quality decor. The real gem at this hotel though is the service. The welcome begins from the moment you pull up outside. Everyone was warm and engaging, which really makes it feel special at this hotel

This is a high quality property in the heart of guimaraes. The rooms are spacious and very confortable. The breakfast is really good. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It was home for me for 2 weeks. It can’t be closer to main attractions! I highly recommend it.

Some truly astounding customer service

This review goes well beyond the 5 stars. While the Hotel was magnificent, the customer service shined even brighter. We arrived in town after a long 6 hour drive through some hard rain. The city had some streets blocked off due to a student parade and it was really difficult to locate the hotel with my GPS. When I called the front desk to get some assistance, they figured out where I was and ran out in the rain to help me finally find the hotel. Things like this is why I love Portugal so much and the staff at the Conquistador fully embodies this. Of course they also gave some great dining recommendations and we had a truly memorable dinner as well.

An absolutely delightful stay. Every detail, from service to cleanliness to the incredible breakfast, was perfect. The Hotel has a lovely old world, classic charm about it. Every room is large and unique as well as beautifully designed and decorated. The breakfast was very complete, from homemade pastries to customized omelettes. In addition, the hotel is within walking distance of all the local sites. Definitely a cut above other hotels.

Beautiful restored hotel

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful restored hotel. Definitely one of the nicest rooms we’ve ever stayed in (Premium double room-Miami). The attention to detail is excellent and everyone is very friendly and helpful. The pool is a delight to cool off in after exploring beautiful Guimares. Breakfast was very nice too. Highly recommended!

Lovely hotel, great service and friendly feel

The service was exceptional and breakfast really lovely. I’m vegetarian and they were happy to accommodate. Lovey old hotel renovated to a very high standard and with beautiful linen, towels etc. The entrance to the hotel is quite tucked away and not so easy to find.
