The Horizon- Award Winning- Sauna Available for a fee
Welcome to the Horizon! This home was featured in Mn Monthly, Arch Magazine, Midwest Home, among others, and has won awards around the globe. Other than her sister properties the skyHouse, and the smaller Aurora, there is nothing like this anywhere on Earth. These are unique, and are a limited design intended to inspire, not just provide a roof over your head. Enjoy the unique beauty of Grand Marais and the harbor from the panoramic window views of this beautiful home. Designed by celebrated Minnesota architect David Salmela to capture all the needs and dreams of a visitor to Grand Marias. Come enjoy this cool cabin in America's "Coolest Small Town". By design, the Sky House provides for all the needs of a vacationing party of up to 6 people in a 1264 Sq. Ft. home but 4 people are ideal. In addition, the Horizon provides an inspiring modern space that allows for privacy among those sharing the lodging, and also provides a breathtaking great room area on the top floor with fantastic views of the Grand Marais harbor, the neighborhood, and the town. Everything is in short walking distance from our little micro community in the heart of Grand Marais. Every restaurant, bar, coffee shop, gallery and Grand Marais' famous beach are all within a very short stroll from your private residence. The home is designed in modern Nordic fashion based on the original Stabur design- a work building commonly seen in Northern Europe. This design culminates a timeline of Scandinavian and Nordic design that the owners began on the property next door that also honored northern work buildings in the roots of their designs. There is off street parking under a sod roofed carport. There is also an electric car charging station in the car port. Walk up to the entry area and pass under the nordic arch to the first of 3 decks where there is room to store bikes in summer, and once inside, there is plenty of room to shake off the snow, hang the coats and set down the skis or snowshoes. Each bedroom is very private is separated from the other by a soundproofed floor and ceiling for maximum privacy. Each bedroom also has its own restroom with shower, work station, free standing closet, queen bed, and balcony or patio with great views for getting away from the group. Continuing up the inspiring staircase leads you to the primary gathering area on the top floor. This area is breathtaking with its expansive windows, view of the town and harbor, Lake Superior and the grounds. There is a fully modern and capable kitchen, an architect designed built in sofa for single sleepers, and a contemporary gas fireplace. The sofa can sleep one adult or two children as is, or it can be modified to sleep one adult above and one adult on floor cushions. Note the unique skylight with modern light treatments and the push button electronic pop up television that you can leave hidden if you wish. There is also a wrap around deck on this top level with fantastic view of the rooftops and harbor and the town and of course Lake Superior. There is a utility room with full size washer and dryer. Everything about the Horizon is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. These homes have an incredibly small footprint both structurally and environmentally. The foundations were designed to take up as little of the yard as possible- by being small at the start and increasing as you go up just like the old Stabur upon which this design is based. No cost has been spared to make the Horizon the highest quality, most significant architectural addition to Grand Marais' beautiful landscape. We hope you will find it warm, welcoming, and a once in a lifetime experience in one of the world's most magical places. Beautiful property both practical and well-appointed throughout. Living room/kitchen offers amazing views of the town, bay and Lake Superior. We thoroughly enjoyed our first stay at this memorable property and will definitely be back again!
Beautiful home, ideal location, very clean & comfortable, and well equipped. Excellent communication by host and seamless check-in. Located within short waking distance to restaurants & shops, Folk School, and Lake Superior shoreline. A wonderful place for a long weekend getaway!
Good design goes a long way; and here, there’s good design at every turn and level both indoors and out. Truly a gem of unassuming hospitality and posh care. You came for the views and location, stay for the sauna, multitude of spaces to chill, entertain, and overall r&r. Well-played holiday!!
We were at the Horizon, Three Sisters' property for my husband's birthday celebration, along with our son and his best friend. The place was cozy, with pristine views of Lake Superior and the Light House. Right in the downtown Grand Marais, this is a perfect place to reside for people who love to walk for breakfast, dinner or an evening stroll to the lighthouse. We had a car emergency with a flat tire and the owners were nothing short of being super helpful and flexible to support our needs. We highly recommend this place to tourists looking to build warm memories in the cute town of Grand Marais.
This is a fantastic spot within walking distance of all the great spots in Grand Marais. The view is incredible. My family (2 adults, 2 kids, and dogs) loved it.

Fantastic Stay!
We had a wonderful stay at The Horizon in Grand Marais. The property is beautiful and the location is perfect!
Todd and Susan have a lovely property AND they maintain it beautifully! Very clean, updated, and fully stocked in the kitchen, bath and bedding (including extra blankets for cool fall evenings) as well as a few board games. They did a terrific job preparing us for our stay at their lovely place- complete with where to visit, hike, and how to easily check in. They made it SO easy to stay with them! Thank you both for a lovely "home away from home!"

Modern Nordic abode with incredible views.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this pristine property in town with amazing harbour views from the light-filled living space. Walk to cafes and coffee, enjoy nearby hikes, or simply delight in the fog and mists rolling in and out of the harbour. Thoughtful details are designed into the sophisticated spaces, and sleeping areas on separate levels provide ample privacy. Host Todd Miller was welcoming, engaging and available if needed. Highly recommended.

Perfect Home Base
The Horizon served as the perfect home base for our trip to Grand Marais. The location does not get much more perfect meaning that even in the midst of winter you can walk to local businesses and restaurants without issue.
The house is impeccable from top to bottom and the entire design is perfect for two couples visiting the area. Both bedrooms and bathrooms are identically equipped with everything you might need as well as extra features to make your stay more comfortable.
The community spaces have everything you need to cook at the home or to relax in whatever way suits you.
We highly recommend this entire property (for a group of 12) or one of the buildings for a smaller group.
Super simple. Super clean. Super convenient. We enjoyed a memorable, non-traditional Christmas at the Horizon. The architecture and design are so impressive as were the local art works hanging in the property. Everything we needed was provided from cutlery to games! We would love to return to enjoy this property and the Great Lake Superior to enjoy a different season. This site is withing easy walking distance to the shoreline, coffee house, pharmacy and restaurants/brewery. Thank you for the time and love you've put into this property and the attention to detail!
We love GM and visit annually. We've been wanting to stay at this newly constructed property in the heart of town and were excited to secure a reservation. The space is lovely, it's well-appointed and the views are spectacular. Every detail is considered. The singular downside is that for a family of 4 it's tricky, as the 2 bedrooms are small with only room for a queen bed, so one of our 2 teens ended up sleeping in the main living area, which is never ideal for us. The space is perfect for 2 couples or a couple with a single child, but not great for a family of 4 with children who are teens and don't want to share a bed. We spent all of our time while at the home on the highest level balcony overlooking the bay--idyllic.

Calming, peaceful, beautifully done home
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this wonderfully interesting home. There were two couples and one single person which worked out fine for the sleeping arrangements. The kitchen is great!! Quality appliances, cookware, all we needed. The views were spectacular. Enjoyed sitting staring at the sailboats anchored in the harbor and watching people mill about. Even though there are other homes in close proximity, it was very private the way it is designed. There was some landscaping still going on, but it didn’t interfere with us at all. Once it’s all done it is going to be very nice with stacked stone patios and walkways with newly planted trees. The beds were very comfortable and loved the plush towels provided. The carport is a nice perk to have, especially if you stay in winter. Todd and Susan were always accessible if you needed. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again, except that being an over middle aged person, my knees didn’t care for doing the stairs as much as I did. That might be one thing to keep in mind if you have issues with that. Otherwise, this is a wonderful location as far as walking everywhere in town, including some hiking trails by the campground on the lake.
We have an awesome stay at The Horizon. This place was so cool, beautiful view of the harbor and within walking distance to downtown Grand Marais. The home has everything you need to have a stress free stay. Communication with the hosts was great and answered any questions we had promptly. We will definitely keep this one in mind for future stays.
Loved this Salmela house right in Grand Marais. The house is well appointed with everything needed to cook and eat in. The beds are comfortable, the living space cozy and the views of Lake Superior are wonderful. Lots of light and a great layout makes the place feel spacious in a small footprint. We hope to return to use the multiple decks during warmer! Wonderful communication with hosts. All in all, a truly lovely stay, in Grand Marais.
This property was ideal for our long work weekend. We each had our own private bed and bath and the upstairs served as a perfect meeting space for eating and working together. The sunrises over the lake were amazing, the kitchen was well equipped and the hosts were very responsive! Thank you for an amazing stay! We will be back.
