Aircraft museums, golf and drag car racing make this an interesting place to visit and it’s just a short drive from Oslo city centre.
Aviation fanatics flock to Gardermoen, a picturesque area situated in the Ullensaker municipality. Find museums dedicated to Norway’s commercial and military airline history. Walk through a forest to a war memorial and challenge the fairways and greens of scenic golf courses. Gardermoen sits surrounded by lush countryside, which you can easily explore by car and bike.
Oslo Airport is a good place to start your Gardermoen tour as it is close to a collection of aviation museums. At the SAS Museum, the history and evolution of Scandinavian Airlines System is celebrated via displays of uniforms, photographs, posters, survival equipment and a flight simulator. Close by, the Armed Forces Aircraft Collection has an exhibition of over 40 aircrafts and helicopters. Among them are World War II fighter jets and one of the first planes manufactured in Norway.
Don’t miss a visit to the Ullensaker Museum, housed inside a military building from the 19th century. Its permanent exhibitions cover everything from meteorology and shoemaking to the region’s military past from 1700 to 1920. Pay your respects at the Trandumskogen War Memorial, a commemorative site and mass grave located in Trandumskogen forest. Behind the memorial are the remains of a tank shooting range.
For something completely different, enjoy the thrill of a drag car race at Gardermoen Raceway. If you come here by car or bike then be sure to cruise along country roads that weave through beautiful landscapes. Pass gently flowing rivers, pine forests and vast lakes such as Hurdalsjøen. Play 18 holes at the championship standard Miklagard Golf Club and nine holes at Ullensaker Golf Club.
Gardermoen is located about 31 miles (50 kilometres) north of Oslo. The Flytoget is a high-speed train that travels from Oslo Central Station to Oslo Airport in 22 minutes. Being close to Norway’s flagship airport there’s a wide offering of hotels to make your overnight stay a comfortable one.
