Pointed or sharp objects, like your precious pocket knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as flares, chemicals agents and gasoline, are also banned.

Being prepared before you get to the airport will make your trip to Jerusalem easy and painless. We've rounded up some top tips for a swift journey past security:

• Keep your boarding pass and ID at hand. They'll be the first things you'll be asked to present to airport security.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Remove anything on you that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• For just a few minutes, you'll need to unplug from the digital world. Your laptop, phone and any other electronics must also go through the scanner.
• Any liquids or gels, such as perfume or hand cream, that you want to bring on board must be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you valuable minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on sneakers are usually not.
