Wherever you're coming from, flying can be a seamless experience if you're well prepared. We've put together a list of handy travel tips that will get your Lummen holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The trick to having a hassle-free flight experience is to pack in advance. So, let's start with the basics: passport, boarding pass, credit cards and any vital medications. Next, bring on board items that'll help pass the time, like your laptop or a juicy novel. You'll also want to bring your chargers, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earphones. Last but not least, don't forget to pop in toiletry items like a toothbrush, facial wipes and a clean set of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items can differ between airlines, the general guide to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes tools, metal cutlery, aerosol cans and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like ice skates, and items that could harm other people, such as swords and guns, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your number one priority when choosing what to wear on your flight. Loose clothing is a smart choice, as are enclosed shoes like sneakers.
• Caused by sustained periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clotting condition that can affect passengers during long-distance flights. Lower your risks by drinking water, keeping your legs and ankles moving and wearing compression socks to help your circulation.

The simple answer is — be prepared. We've rounded up some helpful hints for a hassle-free trip through airport security. Look out Lummen, here you come:

• Your travel documents and ID will need to be inspected by security personnel. Keep them within easy reach so you don't hold up the queue.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your coat, belt, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• All electronic devices, including your tablet and phone, will also need to be scanned separately.
• Any liquids or gels, such as shampoo or hairspray, that you want to take on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you a few precious minutes. Boots and heavy shoes are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on shoes usually aren't.
• Sharp or pointed objects (like knives and scissors) are not allowed in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them in your checked suitcase.
