Wherever you're coming from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you're well prepared. We've put together a list of handy tips that will get your Fua'amotu holiday started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a pleasure if you carry the right things. First of all you'll need basic toiletry items, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a clean pair of socks and a good novel. Secondly, leave space in your bag for your electronic gadgets, chargers, any daily medications and perhaps a neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, don't forget to bring your passport, travel docs and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Pointed or sharp objects, like your pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosols and matches, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your priority is to feel as comfortable as possible. Choose shoes that are easy to slip on and off, dress in loose, natural-fibre clothing and remember to take a pullover in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by lengthy periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Wander around the cabin and stretch your legs or do some gentle exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

• Your travel ID and boarding pass will need to be inspected by airport security personnel. Have them close by so you don't hold up the queue.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• All electronic gadgets, including your phone and tablet, must also be scanned.
• Don't forget to remove liquids and gels from your hand luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• It's also possible you'll be required to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a clever idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, put them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
