• Air travel can be a stress-free experience if you bring the right things. Firstly, you'll want some toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a clean set of clothes and a good book. Next, leave space in your hand luggage for your electronic gadgets, chargers, any medications and maybe a quality neck pillow as well. Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like your treasured pocket knife, and dangerous products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, flares and poisons, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• You'll want to go for comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes by dressing in layers, and pick easy-to-remove shoes like slip-ons.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It results from blood clotting due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks or tights.

The trick is to be well organised before you arrive at airport security. That way, you'll be stepping onto that plane to Change before you know it. Follow these helpful tips and get your trip off to a flying start:

• Be sure to have your travel documents and ID handy. They're the first things you'll be asked to present to security.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your belt, coat, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• Electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go through the machine for inspection. Don't worry, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Want to bring along your favourite cologne? Not a problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, you can bring it with you on board.
• It's also likely that you'll be asked to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a clever idea.
• Sharp items are not allowed in the cabin. They'll be confiscated at security, so put them in your checked baggage.
