• A plane ride can be easy if you pack the right stuff. First of all you'll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh set of clothes and a magazine or two. Next, find room in your hand luggage for your electronic devices, chargers, any vital medications and maybe a blow-up neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, remember to bring your passport, travel papers and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Pack all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated by authorities. Sharp or pointed objects, like your treasured pocket knife, and products which are explosive or flammable, such as spray paint, flares and poisons, are also not allowed.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim here is to be as comfortable as you can. Pick shoes that are easy to pull on and off, dress in loose, breathable clothing and don't forget to take a sweater in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-haul flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks.

• Keep your passport and boarding pass close by. They're the first items you'll be asked to present to airport security.
• Your coat, belt, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
• All your electronics, including your laptop and phone, must also be scanned separately.
• Remember to remove gels and liquids from your hand luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each item should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Slip-on shoes are a good footwear choice as you're less likely to be required to remove them when going through security. Big boots and other heavy shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
