• First and foremost, pack your passport, travel documents, credit cards and medications. Next, you'll want some entertainment to while away the hours. A juicy novel and a phone filled with your favourite movies are some wonderful options. If you plan to take a quick nap, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also be useful. Finally, squeeze in a toothbrush and some facial wipes to ensure you arrive at your destination looking fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items differs between air carriers, the general guide to follow is avoid carrying anything sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, knives, fuel and fireworks. Sports equipment like baseball bats, and items that could harm passengers, such as swords and batons, aren't allowed in the cabin either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim is to be as comfortable as possible. Choose shoes that are easy to slip on and off, dress in loose, breathable clothing and don't forget to bring a pullover in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-haul flights. It results from blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.

• Your boarding pass and travel ID will need to be inspected by airport security. Have them easily accessible so you don't hold up the line.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on luggage will be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that is likely to set the alarm off. Items like your jacket, belt and earphones will be required to go through the machine.
