Adorable Honeymoon Cottage by the Lake
This vintage summer cottage is across the road from the lake bluff, and offers a lovely view of the lake and is a quiet, rustic getaway for newlyweds or young families with one or 2 small children. This is not a good choice for folks who are "condo people"--in other words, it's small, old fashioned, and not for everyone.
The deck provides a place to grill your dinner as you sip a cool chardonnay from the nearby winery as you watch your children playing on the swingset. The small but serviceable kitchen has everything one would need, including coffeemaker and microwave, pie plate and rolling pin!
Linens are provided for the DOUBLE bed in the bedroom. In the living room is a hide-a-bed--also a double--which has a blow up mattress. There's a powerful window unit air conditioner, and there are also space heaters if you're coming late (or early) in the season.
The beach access is just a short walk away, down a quiet country lane (one quarter mile). The small public beach features a creek which will delight the little ones, and is home to "lightning rocks", making it a favorite of rock hounds. Other local beaches are nearby, and have been listed among the best beaches in the world!. Check out the county park about five minutes north, the Casco preserve, which is about 5 miles south. South Haven and Saugatuck both have impressive beaches as well. Glenn is situated between South Haven and Saugatuck, making it ideal for swimming, shopping excursions, wine tasting, brewery hopping, or for renting a boat or wave-runner. Great restaurants are within 10-15 minutes in 3 directions. This is a cottage for those who want to get away from it all, but want to be within reach of all the action. There is a convenience store in town that has an amazing selection of wine and spirits, snacks, pizza.
On a rainy day, we provide puzzels, toys and games. There's a movie theater in South Haven with the lowest prices imaginable that plays movies popular with children and adults.
Check out our history: The Kerr family has been vacationing on Fabun Road since the early 1900's when my great grandmother, Henrietta, came from Chicago to spend summers here, playing organ for the local girl's camp. She subsequently bought the property next door to the camp. To get here every summer, she had to take a boat across the big Lake, land in South Haven, where she would get on a horse drawn hay wagon with her trunk full of her summer clothes, and once she got to the cottage, she stayed for the whole summer. Her house still stands at 1286 Fabun Road. My father spent summers here as a boy, and so did I. We didn't have a phone in the old days, or a TV, or even running water! We played Monopoly or Sorry, and card games, and built fires on the beach. When we kids would get bored, my mom would just send us out for a walk in the woods. It helped me learn how to enjoy my own company, and be creative. I think every child should spend summers on Fabun Road!

Small and cozy little place to stay. Perfect for us since all we were looking for was a place to sleep at the end of the day. Beautiful beach location as well, wish we had time to explore it. Host was very nice and helpful as well.
This tiny cottage is cute and comfortable. The owner’s description is accurate. The internet works fine, but this cottage is just the spot to take a break from the digital world. It was the peaceful getaway we were looking for. This would also be a great place to stay for a solo retreat to write or do watercolor!
My wife and I really enjoyed our weekend stay at the cottage. It was clean and had all the necessities that we needed for the weekend. You can enjoy a view of the lake while sitting on the deck. The beach was a short walk and was uncrowded and relaxing. Great base to go to attractions in the area.
This little hidden gem was perfect for my husband and I. Keep in mind it is an old school, semi-rustic cabin with the necessities to make the stay more than comfortable. (We are all about the older, historic feel of places) But the surrounding outdoors…INCREDIBLE!!! We had the views and sounds of Lake Michigan from the porch and living room, deer in the yard, almost ZERO TRAFFIC down the road. Just so quiet and peaceful and wonderful. We enjoyed so much that we booked our Spring trip for there while sitting on the porch. Anyway it is my new favorite spot. Thank you again to the host for offering this peaceful slice of heaven in a very busy world.
This little cottage was perfect for a peaceful retreat. Quiet and restful for taking walks down to the beach or watching the beautiful sunsets from the porch.
Overall we had a good visit. The location of the property was great and close to everything we wanted to do. The street was very quiet and peaceful with a beautiful view of the lake. When we first checked in, there were many spiders, a wasp, and other bugs that we had to take care of, but we didn’t have too many after that. We were however nervous of more bugs getting in since the seals on the windows and doors weren’t great. The amenities didn’t seem to quite match what was actually available (no shampoo, box tv didn’t work, heat was only from little space heater that took a long time to kick in). There are definitely many simple upgrades that could help elevate the experience of this property, but it was okay for a shorter trip. The location and close access to the beach was the best part for us.
The perfect sweet tiny lake cottage if you want to just chill and enjoy the quiet and sound of the water for a couple of days. The cottage is simple, but it has everything you need to hang out by the lake and the walk to the public beach access is quick and easy. We had a great time.
This is my second time staying at the cottage. I love its location. It's near enough to drive into South Haven to enjoy shopping, restaurants, and the South Haven Beaches. When you are done with that, you can come back and enjoy the peace and quiet. It's near the lake and you can walk down the dirt road viewing the beautiful sunsets. It's an old fashioned cottage so if you are looking for all the modern conveniences, it's not for you, However, if you want to step into the past, unplug, spend time reading great books and just rest, it's perfect.
We took our family of 4 for a 2 night beach getaway. The cottage was perfect! The amenities are a tad rustic, and our phones didn’t work, but we didn’t care. That is what we wanted! We only needed the cottage for a place to sleep at night. We were gone all day during the days. Spent our daylight hours swimming and getting sunburned on the beautiful beaches at South Haven. South Haven was only a 17 minute ride from this cottage. We had an awesome lazy getaway. Exactly what we wanted!!
The cabin was as suspected from the information on the listing. We loved to older vibe and how quiet the area was. Being by the lake gave gorgeous views and the primitive beach down the road was fun to take our chairs down to and relax.
WIFI did not work the entire time so it wouldn’t be a good stay for young kids that are attached to devices. Take plenty of bottled water because the water is rusty. All in all it’s a great place to unwind and is very close to so many fun attractions. It’s an easy drive to South Haven, Saugatuck/Douglas, and Holland.
What a wonderful location! Just a short walk to the lake and a very quiet road. We were looking for technology free time so this was a great choice for us! It is an older home so if you are hoping for a flat screen on the wall you won't find it. The kids did make use of the old tv and vhs player ( tv did randomly turn off quite a bit and may need replaced soon) but we spent most of our vacation outside of the home. The owner was wonderful and had a quick response if needed. We can't wait to come back!you are expecting a flat screen tv or
This was our 2nd year here, on our 1st anniversary. Small cottage perfect for two adults. With Lake Michigan across the road, we could watch sunsets every night. Don't count on beach access however; neighborhood sits on a bluff above the lakeshore, with difficult access. Howerver, the wonderful beaches at South Haven are 20 minutes away. , and the many attractions of SW Michigan are convenient. Plus, a beautiful neighborhood.
Cautions about the cottage: the full-size bed is small if you're accustomed to queen or larger; the only heater is a small space heater (not relevant most summer weeks, but our stay was CHILLY). Finally, cottage is small, don't bring a lot of stuff!
Loved the cute little old time cottage. I would go there again. The location is beautiful. It is very cozy. Love the bed in the bedroom- very comfortable. Even the Hide a bed was very comfortable after the air mattress in it was inflated. The house could use a few tiny fixes.. The pull down shades on the windows did not want to retract, and the kitchen sink wouldn’t stop dripping! Otherwise awesome little place.
. Ps. We had a severe thunderstorm with tornado like winds early our 1st day with heavy rainfall. The rain gutters could not keep up and overflowed resulting in flooding the front yard.
I couldn’t rave about this place more. My best friend and I wanted a quiet girls weekend at the beach and this place was key to our experience. We absolutely loved down to every detail, I felt I was in my grandmas house and it couldn’t have been more welcoming. We even rewound and watched grease on vhs on our little tv in the bedroom one night and had a sunset fire outside the other. The views from the cottage were spectacular, sunset walks are definitely recommended. Though the beach access was farther than we had anticipated and the path down to the beach was a bit treacherous we braved it and enjoyed exploring. We traveled to South Haven just a fifteen minute drive away for our beach days however, much less rocky and also amazing. If you want to stay at a modern updated pristine spot, this isn’t your place. If you want to feel like you’re stepping back in time to a simpler place, surrounded by pink, floral, and familiarity this is it. We loved our time here so much and definitely want to return!
The home is old but charming, and clean and bug-free. The gravel road neighborhood was quiet and we saw lots of deer. Although Lake Michigan was visible from the home (across the road), other people own the lake-side property so we were not allowed to sit at the top of the bluff overlooking the lake. Glenn Beach is 1/4 mile or so down the road. People need to be in good physical condition to get down to Glenn Beach as the gravel and rocky incline to the water is steep and partly washed out. There are wooden stairs on part of the incline but they are not placed properly (the staircase is anchored to the ground at an unusual angle) and there is a railing on only half of it. The house itself was fine and the area was beautiful. We ended up spending our daytime hours in Saugatuck so that we could be near the water. The host was very responsive to texts. Thanks for sharing your cottage!
After reading some of the reviews it is clear they just didn't read the description. The host clearly states it's rustic, old fashioned and not modern. The listing does say here is a hot tub, there isn't. The fire pit is a small metal patio type fire pit. Still meets the need. The grill needs replacing. The walk to the beach is exactly as described. While it isn't secluded, the cottage is located down a dead end, gravel road. The lake can be seen from the porch and from the living area, and can definitely be heard (my favorite part!) The bed is a full size, very small especially if you're used to a king, just beware. Internet is almost non-existent even with their Wi-Fi. Overall it was a nice week, we had little expectations, nothing was misinterpreted (other than the 'fire pit' and 'grill'. Would definitely go back!
The cottage was perfect and cozy with tasteful grandma vibes. Very clean, which was most important. The beach is not a horrible trek through the woods like other reviewers said. You walk 10 minutes back the way you drove into the neighborhood. There is a BEACH sign by a guard rail at the beginning of that dirt road with wooden stair steps down. Charming and quiet neighborhood. We did not like the beach personally. We found it too small and rocky. There were slabs of concrete with rusted metal bits piled with tires on the edge. Maybe a lanfill project? We took some rusted metal pipes out of the water so kids wouldnt step. We watched a pretty sunset here and the rocks were fun to hunt. We ended up driving more thane xpected in search of a beach, but were so happy to come back to spend the evwning in our cottage. The host did really well. Jad an internet issue but i think maybe it was only me and my boyfriends phone because other reviews dont complain about that. Couldnt get to my vrbo chat to communictae because of it. But all went well. We found North Beach in South Haven (25 min drive), which was very separated with fences to keep private beaches from public. The public beach sections were laughably small. There was an amazing boardwalk with all sorts of shops along the Black River near this beach though! We settled on Oval Beach in Saugatuck, which was expansive and beautiful. The parking here was 15 bucks. There was a cute area here named Douglas with shops. We had fun!
