Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in False Island?
The best area to stay in False Island is the main town of Oakhaven, particularly around Main Street and Harbour Drive.

Oakhaven is the heart of False Island, offering the most amenities and direct access to the harbour. Main Street is where you'll find the majority of the island's shops, restaurants, and local businesses. Harbour Drive runs along the waterfront, providing views of the fishing boats and the bustling port activity. The layout is quite compact and walkable, making it easy to explore on foot.

Couples looking for a relaxing yet engaging trip will find Oakhaven ideal. You can enjoy strolls along the harbour, dine at excellent seafood restaurants, and easily access boat tours directly from the docks. The False Island Museum, located just off Main Street, offers insight into the island's history and natural environment.

For solo travellers, Oakhaven provides a convenient and welcoming base. It's easy to meet locals and other travellers in the pubs and cafes, and most guided tours and excursions depart from this central location.
When is the best time to go to False Island?
The best time to visit False Island is during the summer months, from late May to early September, when the weather is mildest and wildlife viewing opportunities are at their peak.

During this period, the days are long, with nearly 18 hours of daylight in June and July, allowing for extended exploration and activities. Temperatures typically range from 10°C to 18°C, making it comfortable for outdoor adventures like hiking, kayaking, and fishing. This is also when False Island's abundant wildlife, including bears, whales, and various bird species, is most active and visible.

For those interested in fishing, particularly for salmon, July and August are prime months. The rivers and coastal waters teem with fish, offering excellent angling experiences. These months are also ideal for exploring the island's many hiking trails, as the ground is generally dry and the flora is in full bloom.

If you're seeking a quieter experience with fewer crowds, late May and early September can be excellent choices. The weather remains pleasant, and you'll still have good chances for wildlife sightings, especially as animals prepare for the colder months.
