There are hundreds of hiking trails and many of the famous 14ers are right behind the house like Mt. Sherman, Mt. Democrat, Mt, Bross, Mt. Lincoln, and Quandary. If you are a fisherman, this is the place to go. The Platte River offers Gold medal fishing and there are many lakes as well such as Montgomery Reservoir, Antero, Spinney, 11-Mile, and Jefferson Lake. You can go to a different location every day. In the winter, you will find skiing and boarding at Breckenridge, Keystone, and A-Basin. You can also drive to Copper Mountain and Vail from the home. There is sledding, tubing, ice skating, ice fishing and much more just minutes from the home.

The stay was wonderful but i do wish the pine trees were cut down so i could see all the mountains from the deck.

Ptarmigan Lodge review
The lodge was wonderful. Seems a little rundown and could use some TLC. The one complaint is, the heat never worked. We had the thermostat set correctly. I emailed the office and was told it had radiant heat in the floors and it took awhile to warm up. It NEVER did and we had some nights in the low 40's even high 30's. Finally we lit a fire to take the chill off.
Felt very secluded yet close to other homes. Would have liked a clear view of Mt Sherman without the trees blocking it. However all in all it was a special stay.

My wife and I wanted a scenic, secluded home to celebrate our 50th anniversary. The "Ptarmigan Lodge Home" was just what we were looking for. The staff at Second Home made the week a great "Golden Anniversary" to remember. Thanks Glen & Connie
Family vacation. Was a good amount of dog hair on the floor in basement bedroom and bathroom. But I found a vacuum and cleaned it up. Not that big of a deal. We also lost hot water on day 3. Luckily my husband is handy and was able to text with the problem. They had it fixed the same day we informed them. Beautiful location. Rough road to get up to but well worth it. Great house to rent.
Our group consisted of 4 of my daughts, my wife, and my elderly mother in law (with 2 pups). We loved the house and enjoyed the stay. We found lots of good hiking nearby (one really good one is a half mile away).
Staying at this high of elevation definitely took a toll on us as Midwesterners. That was a known factor up front but definitelycomes into play more than we have noted at the 10,000 and 9,000 ranges we normally sleep at.
I would definitely recommend this home to others.
It was very nicely equipped and the accommodations were very wrll laid out and had very comfortable couches and beds too.
We seen a fox, moose (2), and numerous very pretty birds in the neighborhood and really enjoyed ou r stay overall.

Charming cabin and peaceful getaway, okay amenities
We had a peaceful few days at this property. It's very remote and the accommodations are very basic. Kitchen is not very well equipped, cleanliness wasn't up to my standards, especially when considering the high cleaning fee that is included in the booking. However, the beds were clean and pretty comfortable, the surroundings are beautiful and it is very peaceful. Fishing and hiking nearby, but not walking distance. You'll need to drive to everything. There is internet, but it is very spotty. If you need to work or do school from your getaway, you'll need to find somewhere else to stay. Since I wanted the teens to unplug for a few days, this really fit our need.

Our family had an amazing time at the Ptarmigan Lodge. There were 4 adults, 2 kids (10 and 13) and 3 dogs and there was plenty of room for all of us! The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed. We enjoyed the horseshoe pit and exploring the woods around the property. The area was very quiet and peaceful. We did see a deer hanging out around the cabin for most of the day. We enjoyed the loft with lots of seating for a movie night. The sitting area on the main level was a hit in the evenings where we could sit and enjoy the fire. As it is with many homes, the kitchen and dining room area quickly became the hub for activity and gathering. We were all able to enjoy a paint night, game night and just enjoy meals in the dining area with plenty of space. I cant say enough wonderful things about the property and what a great time our family had. We will definitely be returning. ❤️
I will note that on the 5th day of our stay the water heater went out. I reached out to the property owners and they were VERY responsive. It required more than a quick reset and someone came out quickly to get it fixed. What more could you ask for? :)
It was our first time thru Colorado, really not sure what to expect. They said 4 wheel drive or chains are needed in winter months and I can understand that. It was about a 15 min drive up a dirt road, and it's not a smooth dirt road, either. I have a Honda Pilot and had no issues and I did see other much smaller cars taking the road, just very slowly. Not a deterrent, just be aware. We stayed in June and it rained every night, which was fine except that it got exceptionally dark outside and we had absolutely no window coverings, which made us all uncomfortable. Being in the house with lights on and no way to see out, but anyone could see in definitely played with our imagination. Maybe that's a normal cabin thing, but it isn't for us, personally. Not necessarily a bad thing, but would have been good to know. The couches in the loft area were super comfy, and that was a huge help, since that is where we all ended up sleeping. The comforters were really nice, and you get to enjoy water straight from the faucet. Overall, a decent place to stay.
We had an amazing week during our stay! Communication was excellent, staff went above and beyond, location was perfect, cabin had everything we needed. We saw lots of Moose on our drive up CR 14 to the cabin. Highly recommend!
