If you travel into Esbjerg by boat, you will be welcomed by the 9 metre-high white sculpture Man Meets the Sea. Whether you intend to spend your full holiday or simply a weekend in the town, don't miss out on a visit to the Wadden Sea National Park, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Start the day with a walk past the town's landmark Esbjerg Water Tower and carry on down Denmark's longest pedestrian street to browse the wide range of shops. Remember to take a look at Torvegade after dark to see the Stjernedrys sculpture at its best – the lights, or stars, which have been made a part of the cobbled streets represent the night sky that was visible above the town on 1 January 2000.
If you prefer an active holiday, rent a bike to explore, or try your hand at a range of water sports on the North Sea such as wind or kite surfing. If you're more the spectator type, Esbjerg has top-class ice hockey and football clubs. There are several main roads leading into Esbjerg, making it easy to get to. There are also rail links to Struer to the north and Kolding, Funen and Zealand to the east.
Visit Esbjerg and the Wadden Sea in the autumn to marvel at the phenomenon known as ‘Sort Sol’, when hundreds of thousands of starlings gather together and fly in mesmerising formations before settling in to roost for the night.
