"It's a student halls of residence. If that's what you're expecting I would imagine you'd be very happy with the room. If you're expecting a hotel, it's not a hotel. It was exactly as I was expecting. Comfortable, no frills, perfectly fine for a one night stay for me. Wifi was great. A little bit of noise at times, it's student accommodation, but not too noisy by a long way. I recently stayed at the IBIS in Bristol and that was far noisier. Would happily book again for a short stay."

"Good location but the check in was not organized. There was someone in the parking spot. They need more explanation about the permits which you must display. In the end I spoke to the concierge to sort it out. The place smelled of smoke. It was a good size and location if a little worn in places. The kitchen isn’t bad and it’s large space. It would help for check in if the keys were labelled and it came with instructions"

"The accommodation was spotlessly clean, cosy and modern. Everything we needed for a long weekend away, the welsh cakes and fresh milk we found on arrival were a fantastic welcome. The car park was a stones throw away and very reasonably priced. We will definitely book again."

"There’s lots great about this place but it’s got its quirks. It’s spacious and would be great for a family or larger group. It’s conveniently located about 10min walk from the train station. There’s a few pubs and a gas station for food nearby. Great if you’re going to a show nearby. It was very loud when we stayed there with traffic and the unit below us. The lock on the front door is picky and we got locked in for a while and had to call the owner. They were very responsive and helpful though....

"This was an excellently decorated & comfortably furnished apartment, perfectly located in a quiet location in the main part of town. We parked a short distance away at the ASDA car park, which was reasonably priced via the JustPark app. Helpful owners & excellent communication. We didn’t use the cooking equipment as the apartment was close to a number of chain restaurants - we did notice that there was no sharp knife nor microwave but otherwise was very well equipped. "The hotel has been bought out by Hilton group & is need of a refurb, as it's one of the oldest buildings in Cardiff. I didn't eat breakfast there. So annoying that you cant park at the hotel + have to pay £24 to park at Sofia Gardens car park close by. "
"This is a great hotel option. Rooms very clean with two double beds - hard to beat for the price. Ev charging is excellent. £10 for a minimum of 6 hours allowing a full charge on my car. When compared to the price of local public charging (£30-£40) this is a fantastic additional benefit. Only slight negative is that the hotel only allows guests to all check from 3pm even if rooms are ready. This meant we had to hang around for 45 minutes to check in at which point a crowd of guests were also queuing to check in. Please review the approach for check-in as there has to be a better way!!"
"This hotel is absolutely amazing. The architecture is stunning and decor is beautiful. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. The rooms are spacious with really comfortable beds. We had a wonderful stay and cannot wait to come back. The Receptionist that greeted us and checked us in was wonderful - I wish I had taken his name. He was so helpful with advice about the area and was friendly and welcoming. An amazing member of staff. To be fair all the staff were really good! A wonderful stay."
"Upon arrival the staff were very friendly in helping us to check in on the touch screen system. The room was comfortable, spacious and clean, with a coffee machine and kettle. We did not use any of the other facilities or have food."
"Room was a good size and was nice and clean (as was the rest of the hotel). The facilities were OK, but the whole hotel feels very tired and dated and not really what I’d expect from a 5 star. The food was fairly standard, no better than the food I’ve had in other 3 and 4 star hotels. Pool looks great in the photos but was extremely busy on our stay. Communication in advance of our visit wasn’t great - I emailed twice to ask a so eventually had to call instead. Parking charges for guests are steep. Not a terrible stay, but not somewhere I’d rush to go back to"
"The room was nice and spacious but the bathroom looked dated specially the door. We pulled the beds together because we had children with us and where the bed was it was very dirty on the floor we found the an old dried cheeto under the bed which was not pleasant. The amenities were really good we really enjoyed the swimming pool, steam and sauna. Breakfast service was good and we found the staff very friendly and helpful. The views from the room over the castle were also really nice."
"As a seasoned traveller who stays in 20 to 30 hotels a year, I know the Clayton brand well from stays in Manchester, Bristol and London.
My requirements are simple: a comfortable bed, a decent shower and a good breakfast.
The “Deluxe Double” bed felt small, measuring 4ft 4in on a 4ft 6in base. The bathroom has a fixed shower head over a bath with a shower curtain rather than a modern walk-in shower. The Executive rooms appear to offer the same setup.
Breakfast was acceptable, but poor by modern hotel standards. The bread beside the toaster was partially frozen, the fruit selection was limited, and the continental offering consisted of a few slices of salami and cubes of cheese. There was no fresh loaf to slice yourself and no proper cheese or cold meat selection.
The location is excellent, and the hotel serves its purpose if you simply need somewhere to sleep. However, compared with other Clayton hotels I’ve stayed in across the UK, it falls short of the standard I’ve come to expect from the brand."
