What makes this unit truly special is its connection to history. It is part of the original Hequembourg estate, built in 1910. Upon arrival, you'll receive a booklet featuring original pictures of the house and information about a children's camp that Major Hequembourg operated in the 1920s.

This home was perfect for our weekend getaway! We loved the historical aspect and beach access even though it was cold. Town is small but has a few hidden gems to eat at! We will be back!
My family and I stayed here for 6 days and it truly could not have been better. We'd never been to the area, but were looking for a mellow "beach" experience and this delivered beyond our dreams. The access to the water is so easy, every detail of the room we stayed in was charming. The kitchen is well stocked with spices and all, they do a great job managing the temperature of the home especially in the middle of summer. It's hard to put into words just how much we enjoyed the space and its offerings.Bonus: There's also a family owned drive in movie theatre right down the road!
The house has a lot of character, is very unique, quirky and eccentric. It was a little too old fashioned/crammed for our taste, but our children loved it and thought it was magical!
We knew what to expect from the photos – so not complaining ;)
Check-in was easy.
The biggest advantage of the house is the wonderful direct lakeside location, the view, the sunsets. The beach is a little rough but you have it to yourself, the water is clean and very clear on calm days. We enjoyed the garden, chairs, tables with benches a lot! Sat outside to paint rocks, eat, play, relax and went swimming in the lake a lot!
Lots of things to do in the area, too.
The house was very well equipped, the kitchen had everything we could have wished for, we used the rock painting equipment and the best thing for us were the stand-up paddle board and kayak we could use!
I didn't understand from the description on the website, that the house had two apartments for rent. But that wasn't a problem - our neighbors and their dog were very nice and we had lovely chats with them.
My biggest problem with the apartment were the beds. They were way too soft and killed our backs. The couches in the living room also were very uncomfortable and there was basically no place where you could hang out comfortably. Another no-go for me was that the windows couldn’t be opened at all.
This house could be absolutely amazing after some tidying up and some new furniture!
All in all, we enjoyed our time by the lake a lot! :)

We enjoy our weekend getaway! The weather was perfect! Our host Jewels and her son Alex were wonderful! There is so much history in this home. We loved the cozy apartment. We can’t wait to book our next trip!!!
This was a very eclectic and comfortable stay. The apartment had absolutely everything we could have possobly needed to make our visit memorable. The location is amazing, situated beachfront on Lake Erie. Jules, oir host, was friendly and accommodating. I'd definitely stay again.
What a great place. Very comfortable, clean and loved the location. Every room has everything you need. The kitchen was very well stocked. Loved the walk-in shower relaxing under the stars and admiring the amazing sunsets. Spent most of the time relaxing, walking on the beach and looking for beach glass. You do have to check out the history of the home and the man who built the place. Check out the photos and documents pertaining to the person and the property.Jules and Austin were great. Enjoyed talking with them. Will definitely stay again.Thank you from both of us for the wonderful stay. Didn't want to leave.
Beautiful aprtments. Landscaping on grounds was nicely done. Beach area could have been cleaner. LOVED the history and would love to see the first level. Drove me crazy that I couldn’t. AMentities and supplies on site were way over the top! From games, art supplies, tv/DVDs, toiletries etc. Thank you for an interesting place!
This property was very relaxing and charming. We enjoyed playing in the lake and taking walks along the shore. It was wonderful to be able to walk out the door and be on the beach.
The owners are great and made sure we had everything we could want or need.
Good communication with the owner prior to our stay. Detailed access instructions which allowed us easy entry. Very comfortable apartment for the two of us and our small dog. Very well equipped.
Best of all, an amazing location. Right on the lake, lovely beach walks in either direction and incredible sunsets. We had a wonderful time.
We stayed at this beautiful, historic property for a 7 day, summer vacation. Our boys, ages 5 & 7, had a great time playing in the lake, running up and down the beach and playing in the large side yard. The property is well maintained and the apartment was spotless. We had plenty of room and took special note of how quiet the unit was (concrete walls make a difference!). The sunsets are amazing! The property has a wonderful, heart felt history and there are multiple historic documents and pictures to look through. Highly recommend staying at this incredible property!
Our stay was like traveling back in time to this old stone cottage on the lake. It feels like staying at your great-grandma’s house. Wholesome activities. a well-stocked kitchen for cooking, and beautiful outdoor environment. We painted rocks, played games and relaxed in beach chairs on the beach. It was too windy to boat, or we would have kayaked and paddle boarded, too. The owner responded quickly when we had glitches. If you like history, you’ll love your stay.
I book my VRBO rentals with high expectations, and this surpassed those in many ways. I've never been in a location that offered/supplied anything and everything - fully stocked cleaning products, bathroom products, spices, assorted hot/cold beverages, blankets, towels, etc. This is a 1928 cobblestone home, so if you're looking for immaculate everything, it may not be for you. For us, it simply made it more charming. There are some quirky things like older windows and doors, but the updates more than made up for those! There are 2 upstairs apartments, and both are lovely. I'm glad we had the apartment with the balcony, as the October weather was beautiful enough to enjoy it. The Lake Erie weather did turn blustery for 2 days, so the heated bathroom floor was fabulous, along with a super shower and double sinks. Having our own beachfront, and access to several more miles of beach walking, was perfect for us and a water loving labrador. Our hostess, Jul, was the most accommodating and wonderful gem of all. She showered us with surprises, tips, and goodies for the entire stay. Just don't ask her for the shirt off her back, because I'm sure she'd give it to you! We can't wait to go back and re-connect.
We plan to come back, and here are the top reasons why:
1. Being just a few steps from the water and having a view over the lake is priceless. Our family loved the sand (with stones mixed in) beach and swimming in the lake. (This isn't a pristine beach, as it has large driftwood and an occasional dead fish, but it was great for playing in the sand and lounging.) We ate every meal on the picnic tables overlooking the lake and toasted s'mores in the firepit on the beach. We were also delighted to discover that a new business a 5 minute walk down the beach rents jet skis and that Point Gratiot Park, a 10 minute walk down the beach, has beautiful, tiny private beaches to explore.
2. The combination of a clean, modern apartment in an old, rambling house with tons of charm and character is so unique. The apartment itself combines the best of new (a beautiful bathroom with a shower that nobody every wanted to get out of, for example) with the best of old (hardwood floors). The house as a whole has so much character and history that we spent the week delighting in it (our favorite is a front porch built around an 100+ year old oak tree).
3. This is the best stocked rental house we've ever stayed in. We loved the kayak, balance board, and pedal boat. This house has so much more than the basics - a rock painting kit (we had tons of fun with this), paper products for beach meals, plenty of extra blankets, toiletries you may have forgotten, and a very well stocked kitchen, just to name a few.
4. Our hosts were great and responsive. We had a tiny maintenance issue and trouble finding the driveway at first, and they were very quick and friendly in their responses.
We were 2 adults, 2 teens, 2 dogs and 1 Aunti (for part of our stay) for the 1st and 4th of July celebrations and we had the best vacation! Our son took a hard look through each room when we got there and declared, "this place is kitted out" which is high praise from a teen. The kids splashed in the lake every day, searched for beach glass, found the perfect rocks to paint, played basketball on the court, and self entertained for hours. We adults read in the lake breeze, had cookouts every evening and watched the sunsets which were gorgeous! The sunrises are also so beautiful and we left the french doors open to hear the waves crash on the beach during the days when we napped inside as well as overnight. The apartment was great. Everything was comfortable and every possible thing you could think to need was on hand in multiples. We brought art supplies for the kids only to find boxes of supplies in the basement, we brought towels and favorite summer blankets only to find so many other options available. There are books, pillows, spices, sun screen, art supplies, a canoe, a kayak, a stand-up paddleboard, 2 boogie boards, etc for all of the things one could imagine wanting to do on vacation. The water was probably 75 degrees varying between crystal clear and calm, to churned with a steady staccato of waves depending on the change in weather. Even on the couple of grey days we had, the Lake was beautiful with warm summer winds and the kids chased our dogs around the beach when they needed to dry off from hours spent in the lake. Everyone slept well all vacation. The location is also prime. We day tripped to Niaraga falls, Chautauqua, Cassedega, Westfield, and there's music on the Pier in Dunkirk, which we missed, but they have it all summer long. The other apartment was rented to the most amazing couple and we had such a lovely time with them we ended up exchanging information and promised to go visit each other, which is the perfect summation of the vibes this cottage has to offer. Overall, we have never stayed in a more thoughtfully equipped rental. Austin and Julia have made their family vacation home so inviting we promised ourselves that we would return.
Peaceful, comfortable haven on shores of Lake Erie
This unit made for a very restful, enjoyable week of late summer relaxation. The 1920s building maintains many of its historic touches, but the updates to this unit make for a very modern experience–heated bathroom floors, a stone-walled, three-head shower, updated kitchen appliances, comfortable mattress, Roku, Netflix, Playstation, and more.
Our favorite part of the unit was the gorgeous french door balcony that looks directly onto the beach and lake. For our mid-September stay, we watched the sunset from the balcony while we ate dinner before bonfires on the beach at night.
We also took advantage of the kayaks to brave the Lake Erie winds, looked for beach glass along the rocky beach, and spent hours reading and playing games in the pretty, spacious yard. There is another unit in the house, but we didn't hear the other guests and happily coexisted on the large property with plenty of space to ourselves.
We tried many of Auston recommendations for local breweries, vineyards and eateries. While the surrounding area is quiet and spread out, there's plenty of fun and adventurous ways to explore Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Western NY.
We booked this rental after our inital choice had fallen through, we were not disappointed! This rental is AMAZING! Beautifully furnished, spacious, stocked with everything you could imagine. You just move right in and enjoy the lake which is right in the backyard. We will definitely be back :-)
We had a wonderful stay at the property. The beach was perfect for our family including our 3 young children. The usage of the paddle boat, SUP and boogie boards kept our boys entertained endlessly. The beach was nice and sandy. Everything was just as pictured and the hosts couldn’t have been nicer. We will be back!
Wanted a place to bring my family where we could relax and spend time together. This was the place. We brought our border collie and there was plenty of room with the 2 adults and 2 children. So much to do, so close to the water. We will definitely be back. Owner was so helpful and friendly.
Always a breeze off the lake and a private beach to enjoy it on. The apartment is spacious, has a huge kitchen - well equipped for a rental - and a too-die-for balcony. We were fascinated by the building itself, built just as the Great Depression was starting.
Jules and Austin were great hosts and more than responsive.
We did not take advantage of the boats because we were too busy exploring the area. There was lots to see and do in the week we were there.
All in all, it was a great week and this is a lovely place. We may well go back.
