Cozy Quiet at Mill Pond Cottage
Peaceful cottage nestled on historic Mill Pond, the secret of the locals for great fishing and small-town lake life. The Cottage is inlet side of a no-wake lake. Take a paddle board/boat ride through the lily pad path to beautiful open water with excellent fishing and relaxing. Gather on our dock around the grill or fire table or make s'mores around the fire-pit. Swing in our hammock and listen to the frogs or go and see all the region of the Great Lakes has to offer right out your doorstep.
We are located on Mill Pond in pretty little historic Dowagiac. A local no-wake lake, Mill Pond is a favorite local fishing/swimming hole. Although we are on the inlet side of the lake. You can take the lovely lily pad path to the open water in the summer to enjoy the tranquility. Enjoy fishing from our dock and fully enclosed back yard. We provide a hammock, grill, firepit, and fire table. We also have a paddle boat and paddle board for you to use at your own risk, but you are welcome to bring your own kayak/canoe. The cottage is located on a dead-end road and we really love our neighbors so please be respectful that this is a local area. No loud music, parties, fireworks, or events. We are close to everything the great lakes region has to offer, including wineries, breweries, the great outdoors, dining, and much more. But if you are looking for a quiet little getaway nestled into luxury with our 100% linen sheets, beautiful decor, and custom locally roasted coffee, we might be the place you never leave. Just minutes from a lovely little golf course, Southwest Michigan College, and downtown Dowagiac we have the best of all worlds. Welcome home!!

Double wide on a lily pad pond
The inside of this property was very clean and comfortable. The concern came driving through the trailer park to get to it. We never felt unsafe, but it was not expected. The water smelled horrendous, it was not drinkable and we took minimal showers to avoid the sewage smell. On top of that, we had already had issues about trying to "modify" our reservation by one night and the host said we couldn't do that..."it had to be a 2 night minimum" which it was three to begin with. Then she came back with "we don't check in or out people on Saturday". I asked her to send me that written in the policy and she did not respond. I could not cancel so I had to pay for a night no one was staying there due to flight changes. All this being said, there were not many options in this area that we needed to be in. The "cottage" was clean and comfortable if you can get past the odor of the water.
Heather is a very responsive host. She answers questions right away. Mill Pond is very charming! The neighbors are very friendly and wave when they see you. We had a pleasant weekend getaway for my son’s 17 birthday. We will be sure to check out her other properties!
Overall the cabin is quite cute. It is very clean and a comfortable place to stay. My main complaint is that the portion of the lake it is on is very stagnant and feels like a mosquito breeding ground. There was a lack of comfortable outdoor furniture where the only place to relax was a hammock. It's also not close to much with the majority of things to do being about 40 minutes away. However the neighbors are nice and the area is quite peaceful.
Thankfully we stayed early June because I can not imagine how hot it gets in this place. They have cooling units in the bedrooms and living room, but if you try to run all of them, it blows a breaker. The host said they've never had this issue, but not sure how because you literally can't run all units. The breaker had to be reset four times before we gave up and just turned the two smaller bedrooms off completely. Doing so was fine because we weren't using those rooms, BUT it made the rest of the house HOT. We had planned to mostly stay at the place and enjoy some peace and quiet, but it was so warm in there that it was not enjoyable. The pond was very nice, the place has been redone nicely and the bed was very cozy.
