"The Abhainn Ri B&B was one of the most beautiful properties I have ever stayed at. The land is STUNNING, the breakfast was delicious, and Niamh is kind, helpful, and welcoming. One of my favorite parts about our stay was taking a sunset walk on the property grounds and being present with the Irish countryside. Other highlights include the delicious homemade scones in the morning and how comfortable our room was. When I come back to Ireland, I will certainly make a point to revisit Abhainn Ri."

Kildare House Hotel

8/10 Good
"Room was clean but dated. The bed was soft and uncomfortable so didn’t sleep well. Staff were very polite and helpful. Evening meal and cooked breakfast was excellent. Car parking was limited. The hotel was good value for money and they going through an upgrade. Hopefully if we stay again the rooms will be modern and more comfortable."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Donard?
The best area to stay in Donard is generally within the village itself or in the immediate surrounding countryside, particularly for those looking to explore the Wicklow Mountains.

Donard village is a small, quiet community offering a relaxed base. You'll find a few local pubs and shops, and it's well-connected by road to larger towns in County Wicklow. The village is located in a valley, with scenic views of the surrounding hills, making it a good spot for those who appreciate natural beauty.

For couples seeking a tranquil escape, staying just outside the village in one of the guesthouses or country lodges can be ideal. These often provide stunning views, proximity to walking trails in the Wicklow Mountains, and a peaceful setting away from any hustle and bustle. You're perfectly placed for exploring areas like Glenmalure Valley or Glendalough.

Families might find staying in a self-catering cottage in the countryside around Donard particularly convenient. This offers more space and flexibility, allowing easy access to outdoor activities like hiking and cycling.
When is the best time to go to Donard?
The best time to visit Donard, County Wicklow, is typically during the warmer, drier months from late spring to early autumn, specifically between May and September.

During these months, you'll find the most pleasant weather for exploring the stunning natural landscapes that surround Donard. The days are longer, and the temperatures are generally mild, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking in the Wicklow Mountains National Park, visiting Glendalough, or enjoying scenic drives through the countryside. It's also when local gardens and natural attractions are at their most beautiful.

Couples looking for an active, scenic getaway will particularly appreciate this period. The conditions are superb for romantic walks, picnics amidst nature, and experiencing the tranquil beauty of the region without the chill or heavy rain that can occur in other seasons. Many local events and festivals also take place during the summer, adding to the experience.

Families planning a holiday will also find these months most suitable. The warmer weather allows for comfortable exploration of outdoor sites, and children can enjoy the various walking trails and natural playgrounds more readily.
