"The staff was so friendly and always helpful. The rooms were small but beautiful, with a great view over the courtyard. And the best part: for €10, we could rent bicycles for the whole day! "

"The hotel is a perfect little gem for those looking for an authentic Leiden experience. The owner is wonderful, and take great care of the property. Rooms are spacious, with antique and modern charm combined. We normally stay at 5-star hotels with lots of amenities and services - this is not that! More of a 5-star B&B, which was perfect for what we wanted in Leiden. Be warned that the upper floor rooms require climbing very steep and narrow stairs, which would not be good for people with...

"The stay was nice and the staff were very friendly, walking across the street to the mall and also to cafe and restaurants overlooking the river, a big supermarket. Everything you need is nearby. The tram also is very close. "

"We’ve stayed in this hotel several times over the last 20 years. We like the location (easy for Den Haag, Scheveneingen, Keukenhof, Leiden, Delft etc. even Amsterdam, and easy to drive to).
Recently refurbished, the hotel has a new feel and many improvements made. The restaurant is really good (although I’d prefer more variety and more veggie options on the menu if staying more than a couple of nights). But, Van Der Valk for me, have THE GOLD STANDARD of breakfast buffets!! I stay in hotels frequently and have only had a couple come close in the breakfast stakes! I’ve stayed in various Van Der Valk’s over the years and have always loved their breakfasts! The bar area is a really good place to spend some time as well and reasonably priced - compared to UK!
Anyway, this hotel: Good location, easy to access by car, excellent facilities, lots of parking, excellent EV charging facilities (this was important for me as it was my first drive from UK to Europe in an EV).
Around the hotel itself, there’s not much, but it’s one of those places where that doesn’t matter. Everything is a reasonably short drive or bus ride away.

"The room was great! Really warm, awesome bed and bathroom. The reason for the lower scores was breakfast; breakfast is brought in on a tray from an external supplier. The first day was ok, although it’s obvious the tray had sat for a while. When we went to breakfast we found the room was locked and the delivery guy standing outside in the cold (1c) with our breakfast on the tray. At 09:16 (we had asked for breakfast at 09:00 at check-in) a lady turned up to open the door. The breakfast and room were freezing cold but we were hungry and most places in town don’t open until 10am so ate up! There was no apology or explanation offered.
So overall, great hotel but I’d recommend you skip breakfast."
"Great location if travelling around the Netherlands by train. Well situated near the central station with easy access to nice bars, restaurants and tourist info & sites. Breakfast is great, but a bit pricey if you don't want it every day. However, there are good coffee shops nearby and an Albert Hein take-away in the station (a block away). Don't make the mistake of booking the non-cancellable unless you are absolutely sure of your dates. We found it was less costly to book an extra night than to change our dates. Booking the flexible option or with the hotel would have given us the necessary flexibility. A lesson learned at some costs, but local taxes can be reclaimed. "
