Riverfront Redwood Retreat Nestled in Nature
Nestled in the heart of redwood country and perched atop the high banks of the nationally known wild and scenic Smith River lies the historic Woodmoor Gables Lodge. This beautifully renovated 1936 redwoods retreat has 360-degree views of the tallest trees in the world and the Smith River. Wake up to views of the river and to the sound of it rushing by. Enjoy your coffee in the kitchen or dine in the evenings facing sunsets as the river meanders to the mighty Pacific Ocean.
Our family’s river front gathering place is located directly adjacent to Redwood National and State Parks, in Hiouchi, California, just 15 minutes east of Crescent City and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Known for sunny summer days and cool evening nights, Hiouchi is considered the area’s gateway to the redwoods, and Woodmoor Gables is the premier riverfront rental property.
The house sits on 1.3 acres of sprawling lawns, gardens, lily ponds and fountains and has a private deck and small orchard. The architecture is reminiscent of the 16th-century Tudor period, providing a classic ambiance with all the modern comforts to make your stay in the heart of the redwoods memorable and relaxing.
Woodmoor Gables has been extensively renovated using top of the line finishes including granite counters, granite tile and maple hardwood flooring throughout as well as all new appliances, handcrafted maple cabinetry, lighting and furniture. An open floor plan and new windows in every room allow unobstructed views of the redwoods and Smith River.
This two-story floor plan offers incredible options to make your stay enjoyable no matter what the season. The first floor offers an expansive kitchen-dining room layout. The kitchen is furnished with a bar-height counter and chairs so you have a wide, open view of the redwoods and river while you host friends and family. The dining area features plenty of seating (with a table for 12 and room for more) to host family gatherings. After dinner, enjoy the crackle of a Northwood’s fire in the living room, while curling up on one of several couches to enjoy an evening’s conversation. The first floor also has two of the most exciting attributes of the lodge: our redwood paneled sunroom which still has the original lead framed windows and our large mahogany paneled game room featuring a regulation pool table, fireplace and 50” flat screen TV, with plenty of games and reading materials to entertain the entire family.
When you are ready for sleep, chose from our 6 tastefully decorated bedrooms: The Master Suite: located on the second floor, king bed, private view of the river and redwoods, 50” flat screen TV with surround sound system, private walk in closest and master bath with antique claw foot tub and large granite shower The Fountain Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook and private bath The Redwood Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook The Green Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook The Twin Room: located on the second floor, 2 twin beds, garden view, vaulted ceiling The Garden Room: located on the first floor, queen bed, private bath, garden view
The Redwoods and the Smith River are a 5 minute walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds or a short drive to the entrance of Redwood National Park. The manicured lawns and gardens are an incredible treat in the spring, summer and fall, and offer a pond, fountain, rose garden, Japanese maples, and unique trees and shrubs found nowhere else in the County. Just up the road from the Park is the quaint little town of Hiouchi, which offers large morning breakfast (Paul Bunyan Style!) and lunch plates, and a small hamlet store for obtaining groceries and gas.
Because we live locally, we can offer a great variety of suggestions to help seed your trip with places to visit and explore including hikes through the redwoods, beaches or coastal dunes, whale watching, magnificent lighthouses, horseback rides on the beaches and in the redwoods, bird watching some of the 413 plus species known to visit Del Norte County and of course fishing on the beautiful Smith River, known for its world record salmon and steelhead fishing.
We love Woodmoor Gables and invite you to enjoy the redwood’s premier lodge while traveling through the Pacific Northwest or fishing our pristine rivers. Woodmoor Gables is that perfect place for large families or groups of friends to gather for an extended stay-cation. We hope you will consider it a home where your entire family can relax and play.
Our caretaker lives on the property in the carriage house, separate from the home and our guests.

The property was very well equipped. There was plenty of seating both inside and out. The location is perfect for hiking, kayaking, etc. It is very quiet at night. We enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! We loved the house and grounds and breathtaking views. There was plenty of room for everyone and lots of windows overlooking the river. Chris was an excellent host and super helpful. We're already planning to come back.10/10
House was beautiful, property manager extremely nice and helpful with any requests that I sent his way. Location of home for a getaway was perfect and well needed. The sound of the river put us all to sleep every night! Would recommend to anyone looking for that escape from every day craziness!
We came to celebrate my moms life a spend time as a family over Easter. The garden and view were amazing. The house was clean and more then met our expectations. There was 14 of us and we had more then enough space. Absolutely perfect stay
The Gables Manor hosted by Chris Howard is not only nestled beautifully on the banks overlooking the magnificent Smith River, but it is also clean, quiet and wonderfully managed and hosted. This is our third time staying with Chris and it will certainly not be our last.
Our trip out here was brought together at this property, we had zero issues, the communication with the managers could not have been better, and the views really completed it. 10/10 stay!
We loved the location! So much to do! The house was perfect for our family of 15! Everything we needed and then some! Owners were very helpful and responded super fast. Definitely recommend staying here!!
We had a wonderful trip. The house comfortably fit our large family and friend group. The location was spectacular. The river was gorgeous and pristine. We spent days swimming at the nearby swimming hole and walking in the State Park. We are definitely making this an annual destination!
The house is big, clean, and so charming. We had 6 adults and 8 kids and it fit us well. The kitchen had any pot or pan we needed and some basic seasonings. The washer and dryer worked great and came in handy. Would definitely stay again.
A cool house with lots of character. Ideal location. Would like a few locks on bathroom doors and rooms to prevent accidental walk ins from kids in group. Owner great and prompt in dealing with any problems that arise (it is an older building). Thank you for sharing your home with us.
We had a wonderful week with my extended family (8 adults and 2 kids). Chris and Lisa's home is so beautiful and spacious, with a gorgeous view of the Smith river and a prime location that makes for a very easy launching pad for adventures in the redwoods or at the beach. We loved the kitchen and dining room being comfortably big enough for a large group. Would strongly recommend!
Loved it! Amazing kitchen, dining area. PLENTY of room for our large family. We loved the outdoor settings. Kids running and playing while adults enjoyed listening to nature, the river flowing and kids excitement.
Thank you, truly enjoyable.
Can't get a more convenient location if you wish to enjoy the Smith River and its surrounding Parks and ocean. Perched on the bluff overlooking the majestic Smith River this residence is big enough to spread out in and also offers a great wide-open kitchen area to cook and entertain! Great Host makes everything smooth!
I can't even imagine a better place for a Redwoods family reunion. Fantastic location overlooking the river and right next to the redwoods. Beautiful house with really fun architectural details. Plenty of room for all of us. Kitchen with absolutely everything you could possibly want. Wonderful host. I wouldn't change a thing.
We love the Redwoods! This is our families most favorite place on earth. It’s got beautiful hikes and beach fun. This house was a perfect way to enjoy a week long vacation exploring and reconnecting. Great big kitchen to prepare meals. Big table to eat and do our favorite thing play games. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone. And lots of room for the kids to play. This is perfectly located and the drive into town is so beautiful. The owners are quick to respond and the check in process was easy.
This property is beautiful in a relaxing, private setting. It has all of the accommodations of home, and more. The bedrooms fit our different family needs well and was pet friendly. The property owner was very helpful. The barbecues were the only unavailable items during our stay. Overall, we all had a spectacular experience.
Beautiful property in a prime location for hiking in the Redwoods. Kitchen was well stocked and home very comfortable including the beds. Enjoyed the waffle maker! We had a perfect week away. Hosts were very responsive and made everything easy. Even brought our French bulldog who enjoyed the big yard while we played shuffle board!
Exterior windows need a good cleaning, but other than that, the home was very clean.
10 ladies came together for a relaxing three days on the river. 6 beds and 5 baths helped keep everyone comfortable. We had ample kitchen space and the owner came swiftly with anything we were missing. The views were amazing and we hiked the Hiouchi trail along the river just down the street. A local reiki healer came and helped us shift our focus for the upcoming season. The outdoor space has so much seating, which was nice and appreciated. Already planning dates to come again next spring!
This property was amazing. It is very comfortable for a friends and family reunion. The dining room was set up to handle our large group and the kitchen was never too small for multiple cooks. I loved the outdoor spaces especially the fire pit. The pool table in the rec room was a whole lot of hilarious laughs for us terrible pool players. This property is located practically in the middle of the redwoods and a quick trip to the shore. I can hardly wait for the next family reunion.
We are a group of 9 seniors who visit national parks each year. This spacious house was a perfect base for us to explore Redwoods National and State Parks. The Hiouchi Visitor Center and trail access was just minutes away. The house well served the needs of our group--with several bedrooms & 6 bathrooms. The large kitchen and dining area with windows looking out on the Smith River was a wonderful gathering spot conducive to community. The outdoor patio with tables, chairs, firepit, and barbecues afforded great views of the river and forest beyond. Owners were marvelous hosts who provided helpful communication and ease of check-in. Highly recommended!
