With its elaborate façade and iconic towers, Córdoba Cathedral is among the standout landmarks in the city. The church dates back to the early 18th century. Marvel at the sheer size of this behemoth as you peruse its religious gems and learn about its construction.
Relax in the spacious Plaza San Martín from where you can enjoy a view of the cathedral. Note the grand arched portal and the large pediment above it. The building mixes a range of architectural styles, the most prominent of which are Baroque and neoclassical.
Capture photos of the church in the evening, when it is illuminated by rows of lights. Keep time via the elegant clock on the bell tower.
Enter the cathedral and gaze up at the impressive Baroque ceiling of the nave. Marvel at the golden décor surrounding the altar. Climb to the top of the bell tower for an excellent view of the square, with its attractions and the small park. Inspect the plaques with information about the bells.
Peruse the various ecclesiastical treasures, such as the Tomb of General José María Paz and other crypts. See the tabernacle that was donated to the church in 1804. The nave is decorated with paintings from the early 1900s. Admire the fresco of Christ the Redeemer that stands atop the portico.
Note that the cathedral has been renovated several times and much of the initial structure was destroyed in a collapse in 1677. It is open to visitors from Monday through Saturday from morning until early evening.
Córdoba Cathedral looms over the Plaza San Martín alongside the Cabildo in the historic center of the city. Ride a bus to a stop nearby or take a taxi to get to this central square. Visit some of the historic sights of the area, such as the Carmelite Monastery and the Teatro Real.
