Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Conejos?
The best area to stay in Conejos, Colorado, is the area around Antonito, particularly for those looking to explore the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the natural beauty of the surrounding Conejos Canyon.

Antonito is the primary hub in Conejos County, offering the most amenities and direct access to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, a major attraction. The town itself is small but provides essential services and a few local eateries. It's also a gateway to the Rio Grande National Forest, making it a convenient base for outdoor activities.

Families often find Antonito a good base due to its direct access to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Children and adults alike will enjoy the historic train journey through stunning mountain landscapes, and the town provides a practical starting point for this adventure.

For solo travellers or couples interested in outdoor pursuits, staying near Conejos Canyon, just west of Antonito, offers excellent access to fly fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing.
When is the best time to go to Conejos?
The best time to visit Conejos is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and dry, great for outdoor activities.

During this period, the days are long, and temperatures are pleasant, typically ranging from 20°C to 28°C. This makes it an ideal time for couples and families to explore the area's natural beauty. The Rio Grande National Forest, for example, is fully accessible for hiking, fishing, and camping, offering stunning scenery and opportunities for wildlife spotting.

Autumn, particularly September, also offers a beautiful experience with cooler temperatures and the vibrant colours of the changing aspen leaves. This can be a particularly good time for couples seeking a more tranquil visit, with fewer crowds and picturesque landscapes for scenic drives or gentle walks.

While winter offers opportunities for snow sports, many roads and attractions in Conejos can be less accessible due to heavy snow. Spring can be unpredictable with melting snow and occasional late-season storms.
