  • The second oldest building remaining on The Ohio State University campus, Orton Hall was opened in 1893. It is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as Ohio State's first president, OSU Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899. Orton Hall is built of 40 different Ohio building stones. In the outside walls, these stones are laid in stratigraphic order according to their relative positions in Ohio's bedrock. The only non-indigenous to Ohio stone used is Indiana Limestone to build the front steps. It was chosen because of its high concentration of embedded fossils. The bell tower was dedicated in 1915 and contains 25,000 pounds of bells that can be heard regularly tolling across campus. Encircling the top of the tower are 24 columns with gargoyle-like figures which are restorations of fossil animals.

Second rate

Room was clean. However the blow dryer as well as the outlet and the phone in the room did not work. We stayed from Thursday - Monday and not once did any staff enter the room for fresh sheets or towels or anything.

Nice staff. Some of the other travelers were a little sketchy but no one bothered us. Rooms were fairly clean except for the floors. They really need to work on floor cleanliness. Was very quiet for it being a busy weekend.

Service was okay. Staff was very kind and polite. It was very quiet at night as well which is a plus. However our door didn't lock properly and the room was extremely dirty. It didn't look like it was cleaned in several weeks. Our bedding had several stains on it and there was dust and gunk everywhere. In the grassy area at the bottom of the stairs near our room was a bunch of trash, someone's lost pair of underwear, and a few piles of poop. This place was honestly disgusting and I hope that they change for the better and keep it more clean.

Check the room before you stay.

Beds and pillows horrible. Need to fix air conditioner fan. Bangs and clangs all night long. Also, management needs to patrol lot and stop the loud party people by 11pm. Had people partying outside our room until 2am or later. Slamming car doors and people showing up who were not even staying there.
