Nestled in a mighty mountain range, this sunny city offers adventure hikes, whitewater rafting and museums dedicated to the region's pioneer heritage.

Colorado Springs is the perfect access point to a diverse natural environment, which sprawls around the city. Use it as a gateway to the Rocky Range or plan a trip to see the red ochre sights in the Garden of the Gods park.

Begin your Colorado Springs experience with a visit to Pikes Peak, which is closely linked to America's early history. This popular mountain stands a symbol of the 1859 gold rush to Colorado.

Challenge yourself with a hike up to its 4,302-metre (14,115-foot) peak, along the scenic Barr Trail. Alternatively, save your legs and ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. This service only operates from March to December.

After conquering the summit, descend to the Garden of the Gods park, which lies at the foot of the mountain. Photograph its jagged cliffs, characterised by dusty maroon rocks and hike scenic paths to its strange geological formations.

Beat the summer heat with a splashy whitewater rafting tour down the Arkansas River. Alternatively, work on your swing at the golf course or take the kids to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, where you'll see fascinating native species.

In town, discover the history of the area's first settlers at the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum or at the Western Museum of Mining and Industry.

Colorado Springs has an simple layout to navigate. Its grid system is easily crossed using bus routes or taxis, which are plentiful. Because of the area's spread-out attractions, it may be more efficient to rent a car. Roads to Pikes Peak are in good condition and can be accessed with any vehicle.

Colorado Springs is fortunately sheltered by a mountain range, so its climate is mild and sunny for most of the year. If it does rain, the city has a number of great attractions to keep you entertained. Learn about military practice at the United States Air Force Academy, admire the strikingly modern modernist Cadet Chapel, or browse intricate paintings the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Centre.
