Uruguay's oldest settlement preserves the heritage of European colonisation with its cobblestone streets, unaltered pastel houses and informative museums.

Imagine the journey of European settlement at Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay’s oldest town. This preserved settlement features charming cobblestone streets and pretty colonial architecture. Learn at its museums, watch darting fish at the aquarium or experience a stunning sunset panorama from the lighthouse.

Founded in 1680, Colonia del Sacramento was established in 1680, though ownership of the settlement shifted between Portugal and Spain while they fended off British raids. It eventually became part of independent Uruguay in 1828.

The city's richest concentration of heritage is at the Barrio Histórico (Historic Centre). In 1995, this walled district was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Enter through the Portón de Campo, a Portuguese gate constructed in 1745. Within, the tree-shaded Plaza Mayor provides access to several cobblestone alleyways that feature pastel-coloured Portuguese and Spanish houses. Capture delightfully colourful photos along Calle de los Suspiros, a street that has remained largely unchanged since the 1700s.

Climb the Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse via its staircase. From its 27-metre (89-foot) lookout, you'll get uninterrupted views of the town and coastline. Visit on a cloudless day and spot Buenos Aires across the river. Wander between the old town walls and the waterfront to see remains of 18th-century fortifications. Nearby, the marina offers a prime location to watch the sun set with a picnic.

Learn about Portuguese settlers at the Museo Portugués or browse displays of Spanish colonialism at the Museo Español. A single ticket, available for purchase from the Museo Municipal, provides access to all museums in the town. Take the family to the Acuarió, where interactive exhibits bring you up close to marine life.

Drive to Colonia del Sacramento from Montevideo. The trip takes around 2.5 hours. Alternatively, the boat ride from Buenos Aires takes 1 hour. Explore the town via rented bike or golf-buggy. Nearby attractions include river beaches to the north and the Plaza de Toros bullring.
