It is the tenth largest lake in the world by volume (though not in surface area), and the second largest saline lake after the Caspian Sea and the second largest mountain lake after Titicaca. Although it is surrounded by snowy peaks, it never freezes hence its name, which means "hot lake" in the Kyrgyz language. It is some 180 km long and 60 km wide, up to 600 meters deep and located in altitude ca. 1.600 meters, very popular for recreation, mainly in resorts on its north shore.
