WINTER RECESS IN THE MOUNTAIN DESERT OF ARIZONA
By February, the driveway has won.
It gets dark at four. The ice keeps you closer to the house than you would like. The dog has not had a real walk since November, and neither have you. Five months is a long time to wait for spring.
You have thought about going somewhere warmer. But Phoenix in January is traffic and strip malls, Scottsdale costs a fortune, and a rental condo with a shared hallway and an elevator is not really living somewhere — it is waiting somewhere else.
There is a third option, and it is about an hour and a half north of all that.
Windmill Ranch is a single-level 4-bedroom country home on two private fenced acres in Chino Valley, Arizona, roughly 20 minutes from downtown Prescott. No stairs anywhere. Wide-open mountain views front and back, a 17-foot windmill in the yard, and thousands of acres of open state land across the road — the kind of country where you can actually see the weather coming.
You can walk outside in January. That is the whole pitch. Every winter we host guests who come for a month, or for the season, and mostly what they tell us is that they got their days back.
WHY THE MOUNTAIN DESERT, NOT PHOENIX
This is where the mountains and the high desert meet. At roughly 4,700 feet, Chino Valley and Prescott give you real four-season country without the relentless heat of the valley floor, and without the crowds and the price tag of Scottsdale. Winter days are mild and sunny, nights are cool and starry, and the occasional dusting of snow usually melts by lunchtime. It is quieter and more affordable than Scottsdale, with all the everyday things you actually need close by: a historic courthouse square, walkable downtown Prescott, good restaurants, shopping, and medical care.

SNOWBIRDS WELCOME — BUILT FOR THE WHOLE SEASON
We have hosted snowbirds here every winter for years, including one couple from Montana who stayed with us two seasons running. This is not a weekend condo. It is a real house with real closets, real counter space, and room to unpack and settle in. Bring the dog. Bring the slippers. There is space for the kids and grandkids when they fly out to escape the cold too, and quiet office space if you still work a little.

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY
Every VRBO guest who has stayed here has scored us a perfect 10 out of 10 — a flawless record across every single stay for the past four years. We are a husband-and-wife team, we live in a separate casita on the same property, and we are here if you need anything without ever being underfoot.
SUMMER AND SHOULDER SEASON
If you are looking at warmer months: at 4,700 feet we stay far cooler than the Phoenix Valley. Trade 110 degrees for porch breezes and starry nights, just 90 minutes north of Phoenix. Spring and fall are our most beautiful months, and Gunsite students and wedding parties book those weeks early.
