Southdean (Chesters) Parish Church and Churchyard The church was built in 1690 to replace an earlier building at Southdean. The west gable wall and part of the south wall are all that remain today of the original building that was superseded in 1874 by Southdean Parish Church 743319. There are some interesting 18th and 19th century gravestones in the churchyard.

Southdean Parish Church Constructed in the Early English style in red rock-faced masonry and a Westmorland slate roof, this church stands on the east side of the road leading north from the crossroads in Chesters hamlet. It has an open belfry complete with weather cock at the north end and a cross at the south gable. The bell is inscribed "John C. Wilson & Co Founders AD 1876". No regular services have been held in the church since union with Hobkirk Church in 1988. The church was opened in 1876, although 1874 is embossed above the entrance to the lobby. Beautiful place.
We stayed for 2 nights. 3 adults and 2 children. The Coach House was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. There was a lot to do in the area and some lovely walks.
