About this property

The Rockhouse: Unique Open-Concept Beachfront Estate on Lake Huron

  • Welcome to The Rockhouse, an architecturally stunning 3,700 sq. ft. beachfront oasis nestled on the serene shores of Lake Huron in Cheboygan. Custom-designed to harmonize luxury comfort with the raw beauty of Northern Michigan, this 5-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom retreat features an open-concept layout with over 40 glass walls, offering breathtaking, uninterrupted panoramic views of the water and even glimpses of the historic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

Whether you are looking to gather multiple generations for a memorable lakeside vacation, escape for a peaceful remote work stint, or explore the natural wonders of the Straits of Mackinac, The Rockhouse provides the perfect setting to relax, restore, and rejuvenate.

    *** IMPORTANT ARCHITECTURAL & DESIGN NOTE ***
The Rockhouse is a custom, architecturally unique masterpiece built around a dramatic central atrium designed to flood the home with natural light. Because of this intentional open-concept flow, sound and light travel more freely than in standard properties:
    - PRIMARY SUITE (Upper Level): The luxurious primary king bedroom and its ensuite bathroom are integrated into the glass layout and open to the central atrium below. There are curtains rather than traditional walls and solid doors separating this suite from the common areas below.
    - CONNECTED QUEEN ROOM: Located directly off the primary suite is a queen bedroom that shares the master bath. This room does have a solid closing door, but shares the master suite zone. Privacy in this section of the home is intentionally fluid—best suited for families or groups comfortable with an open-concept dynamic.
    - MINIMAL WINDOW COVERINGS: To protect the continuous, sweeping views of the changing lake, window coverings are deliberately minimal. Curtains are installed on select windows to preserve the home's striking architectural integrity.
    - CUSTOM LAKESIDE WINDOWS: To secure the structure from heavy lake winds, several large custom/vintage windows are locked and intended to remain closed. Fresh breezes circulate beautifully through designated sliding glass doors and screened sections.
    - SIDE DECK DOOR: Built strong to withstand lakeside elements, the side deck door simply requires a firm, reassuring push ("good old elbow grease!") to securely latch and lock.

    THE SPACE & INDOOR LIVING
Step through the front entrance and admire the dramatic central atrium bridging the first and second floors. The main level welcomes your group with an expansive, inviting living area centered around a premium, heat-emitting gas fireplace. With the flip of a single switch, you can instantly cast a warm, cozy ambiance across the room—perfect for crisp Michigan evenings.

The fully equipped kitchen and open dining layout make group meal preparation an absolute joy. The Rockhouse is meticulously styled and fully provisioned with premium comforts, including plush new towels, cozy spa-style robes, crisp high-end linens, laundry detergent, and ample coffee supplies to start your mornings right.

    OUTDOOR SERENITY & PRIVATE BEACH
The exterior of the property is an experience all its own. The manicured landscape incorporates natural boulders and water features, highlighted by an elegant front feature where koi fish swim gracefully, adding an immediate sense of zen.

Walk out onto the expansive beachfront porch to enjoy al fresco dining, morning coffee, or evening stargazing. Just steps past the deck lies your own private stretch of Lake Huron beach. Spend your afternoons sunbathing on the shore, watching native birds, dipping into the clear water, or watching the ferries cross toward Mackinac Island in the distance.

    BEDROOM & BATHROOM LAYOUT
The property comfortably hosts up to 12 guests across 5 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms:

    • Lower Level (Downstairs):
    - Bedroom 1: Cozy, fun custom bunk room featuring 2 bunk beds (Sleeps 4)—perfect for kids, teens, or the young at heart.
    - Bedroom 2: Comfortably appointed Queen Bedroom.
    - Bathroom 1: Shared full bathroom serving the downstairs bedrooms.
    - Powder Room: Convenient additional half-bath on the main level.

    • Upper Level (Upstairs):
    - Bedroom 3 (Primary Suite): Luxurious King Bed with panoramic views, open-concept integration to the atrium, and attached open-concept luxury ensuite master bathroom.
    - Bedroom 4 (Off Primary Suite): Queen Bed with a privacy door, sharing the primary suite's master bathroom.
    - Bedroom 5: Additional private bedroom with its own ensuite full bathroom.

Amazing view!

What an amazing property! View is amazing from every room. The kitchen is well stocked. The beach is really private and a wonderful place to enjoy long days! Two things to make others aware of - there is no A/C which is probably rarely needed, but we had a hot week. The host was great and ordered fans for us. The design of the house is also very open and therefore some rooms are not very private. Overall great stay and would definitely come back!

Stunning views sunrise & sunset!

Our family joined together to celebrate our youngest Birthday! It was an intimate family event! We all loved our rooms! Cooking together in your fabulous kitchen and bbq’s! S’mores and chats fireside! The views were fantastic. Swimming everyday! Quick day trip to Mackinac. Downtown Cheboygan was convenient for ice cream and last minute items! Our host was easy to contact. We hope to make an annual family trip! Just what we all needed! Highly recommend! Many thanks!

Cool property. Every room had a view of the lake. Our weather was only fair but good spot nonetheless just woulda been better with more sun. Plenty to do as mackinaw city was only 20 minutes.

Beautifully sited house with a lovely view of the channel between the house and Bois Blanc Island to the north. Windows around the house are so plentiful that the interior is perfect for viewing outdoors and natural light. It is also very convenient for a drive to Mackinac City where you can catch a ferry to Mackinac Island. A couple of items to be aware of that I may overlooked when reserving the house is that the second floor is non-traditional in the layout where there aren’t any walls between the bedroom or bathroom and the atrium connecting to the first floor. While curtains are in place for visual privacy, there’s no audio privacy. The second item is that one of the bedrooms on the second floor is only accessible by walking through the primary bedroom space. This can make for an awkward situation if you’re staying with friends but we made it work.
Early morning sunrise.
Enjoying the fire pit.
Looking to the north from the shore.
Looking from the primary bedroom on the second floor across the atrium and into the primary bathroom. Note that this area is all open and you must pass through this bedroom to reach one of the bedrooms on the second floor.

The setting is absolutely beautiful. The downstairs is especially stunning, with the windows and back door perfectly framing Lake Huron. I loved the deck and the back of the house, and the koi pond entryway was a wonderful touch that made the property feel extra special. There were a lot of nice touches around the home. There were, however, a few things that caught us off guard. We prefer privacy, so bathrooms with large windows but no curtains were unexpected. The lack of air conditioning would have been fine if more of the windows had screens to let in the breeze, but not the bugs. We also experienced a problem at check-in; while the owner was easy to contact and very responsive, I don’t feel we were fully compensated for the inconvenience, particularly since we were traveling with two children and two elderly family members. That said, the beauty of the home and its peaceful lakeside setting made our stay memorable.
