This active church in the Piazza dei Miracoli’s centre sits in the background of almost every photograph of its famous bell tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Cathedral of Pisa, also known as the Duomo, is a massive, Roman-style masterpiece filled with treasures.
Stroll around the church on the elevated walkway that encircles its pillared sides. The cathedral’s architect, Buscheto, is buried inside one of the façade’s arches.
If you have visited elsewhere in Tuscany, you will most likely recognise the Pisan-Romanesque style of the Duomo, which is common throughout the region. The Duomo was one of the first structures built in this style in 1093 and its still considered one of the best examples of Pisan-Romanesque architecture today. The popularity of this beautiful church helped the style spread throughout western Italy.
To enter the church, use the main doors facing the Leaning Tower. A fire in the 16th century destroyed much of the medieval art that the cathedral once held, although you’ll still find an array of works from the medieval and Renaissance periods. Walk across the marble nave and admire the ornate pulpit, which was designed by sculptor Giovanni Pisano.
Step up to the altar to see some of the cathedral’s most beautiful features. Giambologna, who designed several of the church’s highlights including the doors, sculpted the brilliant crucifix. Admire the 14th-century mosaic of Jesus, Mary and St. John spread across the apse. Two bronze angels stand at the entrance to the choir.
Sit in on a Sunday mass to listen to the voices of the choir reverberating through the cavernous cathedral.
The Cathedral of Pisa sits on the edge of the town’s historic centre. Reach it easily by bus or on foot from most areas of Pisa. If you are driving into the city, park for a fee on Via Pietrasantina, which is within a 5-minute walk of the Piazza dei Miracoli.
