Founded in 1896 by steel baron Andrew Carnegie, this contemporary art institution boasts an impressive fusion of painting, sculpture, architecture and furniture.

Spend the day perusing this magnificent museum where Impressionism meet Modernism, and marvel at the work of famous masters such as Monet, Van Gogh and Renoir. Stepping away from what’s considered to be traditional art, wander through the Hall of Architecture and admire one of the most extensive collections of architectural plaster casts in the world, or appreciate the intricate beauty of the decorative art objects on display in the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Galleries.

With a permanent collection of over 35,000 objects and up to 15 temporary exhibits each year, it’s no wonder that this fine museum is one of Pittsburgh’s most popular attractions. Get a close-up view of reproductions of the famous bronze doors from the Baptistery of St John in Florence and the Venus de Milo with a visit to the Hall of Architecture, where more than 140 plaster casts of some of the world’s most renowned architectural pieces are on display.

The beautiful, white marble columns of the Hall of Sculpture are not to missed either, the design of which was inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. This hall is made even more remarkable by the fact that the stone used to create the spectacular structure originates from same Grecian quarry as used for the Parthenon.

Interior design buffs should make a beeline for the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Galleries, whose objects track the evolution of style and design from the mid-18th century to the present. From Rococo and late Baroque influences to Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, the pieces in these galleries offer an insight into the ever-changing tastes of Western society down through the decades.

If you fancy a snack at any point during the day, head to the Carnegie Café for a light refreshment or to the Fossil Fuels Café for something with a little more bite.

There is an admission fee to get into the Carnegie Museum of Art but this fee also covers admission to the Natural History Museum two for the price of one! Be sure to give yourself plenty of time if you plan on visiting both museums.

Situated in the Oakland district, there is plenty of paid parking available should you choose to drive. If not, there is a frequent bus service you can avail of. The museum is open every day except for national holidays. For up-to-date information, please check the official website.
