"Bad experience . No hot water at 5am as one of the staff at the bar had apparently left hot tap on. Couldn’t get out of the front door, no signage as to how to get out"

"Perfect hosts, friendly greetings on arrival and managed to check in half an hour early. A few tired areas in the Buck Inn which could do with freshening up but appreciate it is an old listed building. However this didn’t dampen our stay. Comfy bed and nice clean linen and towels. A great hearty breakfast in the morning set us up for the day ahead. Would definitely return again."

"6 people stayed in our group. Disappointing that we were charged £25 per couple for early check-in. Even as it was only 30 minutes before normal check in. Reception was not up to speed with our bookings as we had pre-paid for everything but when we checked out they got mixed up and printed bill for full amount. Until we very politely informed them. Also whilst good range of breakfast delights very slow service"

"We informed the hotel we'd be arriving early as we were attending a wedding, and they very kindly had the room ready for our arrival. The room was clean and had comfortable twin beds, with a gorgeous view over the village square and Middleham Castle. The welcome we received was warm and friendly. Lunch was excellent; highly recommend the Wensleydale Cheese Souffle and Bangers and Mash! Breakfast was also included and was delicious. As someone who has worked in luxury hotels for years, I was very impressed with everything! We'd definitely stay here again when in the area. "

"Very little parking available and £10 per night. But on street parking a few minutes walk or 4pm to 10am on the square in front. Not a problem. Fabulous location, probably the best in Richmond town. Lovely characterful building. Pricy and breakfast extra. Greggs or Wetherspoons nearby! My issue was with a premium room, 205. One set of curtains couldn’t be opened or fully closed. And window couldn’t be opened due to lack of maintenance. Main problem was the mattress. Unbelievably bad. It was probably very soft when new but by now it was squashed to half its original thickness. Terrible sleep. I’ve had better mattresses in $10 Central American hostels. It’s 29 years since I last stayed and despite the staff denials the mattress felt like it had been in service for longer. Staff excuse ‘we don’t sleep here so didn’t know’. Not good enough. A simple room condition inspection would have identified that. Potentially great but do the maintenance. "

Swinton Park Hotel

"Room was in good condition however it was a disabled room that was not advised on booking. There was an intermittent unpleasant smell coming from the bathroom. Seeing the disabled room I immediately requested a room change but here was not much enthusiasm as we had a 2 night stay and was told the hotel was full the following night so not much they could do and on the first night there were currently no other made up rooms. Overall the staff at the bar and in the restaurant and around the hotel were very good however breakfast on Sunday morning left a lot to be desired in terms of service as anything cooked took an age to arrive and my wife after at least half an hour gave up on hers but it did arrive as we were leaving! The grounds and facilities are excellent. On departure I was clear to my complaint on the room, I was offered a token without any any investigation and offered access to speak with the deputy manager. I declined both and hoped it would have been dealt with differently as my point was not financial and being fobbed off with £50 and having to request the manager did not feel right. My intention was to convey disappointment with the room in the hope of investigation and recognition to a problem with some assurance it would not remain an issue for others. I left feeling no one really cared! "
