If you’re looking for a piece of the real Spain away from the modern high-rises of some of the more touristy coastal towns, try Campello Beach. This getaway destination has avoided the heavy development of the towns around it and the authentic charm of southern Spain shines through. Highlights of the town include the harbour, which is constantly bustling with fishing boats going in and out.
Try a variety of watersports, such as paddleboarding and windsurfing. Walk the stretches of beach to see the delightful oceanfront houses and townspeople who are famously easy-going. Take a daytrip here from nearby Alicante for a family-friendly beach with an unmistakably Spanish character.
The wide stretch of sand on Campello Beach makes it easy to avoid the crowds. Hire watersports equipment from any of the vendors along the beach. If you’re feeling adventurous, book a dive tour or a sailing class. Towels, umbrellas and sun protection gear like sunblock are not available at the beach, so make sure to bring your own.
A meal at one of the regional restaurants on the promenade is an excellent treat after a long swim. Try local dishes such as paella and fresh seafood.
Take a walk along the coast to see rows of beautiful beach houses. Today these dwellings belong to the area’s wealthiest families, although they were once occupied by local fishermen. You can see the process in action at the harbour in the afternoon, where daily fish auctions can get very lively.
Drive 13 kilometres (8 miles) south of Alicante to reach Campello Beach. Parking is free and plentiful. The beach can also be reached by tram, car or taxi in about 15 minutes from Alicante centre.
