The church dates from the 14th century and was restored in 1872. There is a west tower, four-bay nave with north and south aisles, three-bay chancel, two-bay north chapel, and south porch. The exterior of the church is mostly Victorian. The west tower dates from circa 1310 but with a perpendicular top with parapet and battlements containing panels with the arms of William Lexham (died 1500) a Lord of the Manor, and Lady Calthorpe, d. 1511 and also figures illustrating various biblical events. The large brick buttresses were added in the 18th century. The porch dates from the 15th century and was originally of two storeys. The south door is from the 14th century. The nave has a clerestory, and the arcades have octagonal piers. The chancel was renewed in the 19th century and a north chapel was added. The roofs date from the 19th century. The east window was designed in 1953 by A. F. Erridge to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. There is a brass to John Hunteley, d. 1523, but only the wife and children are left intact. In the tower there is a 14th C. stone effigy which was removed from the north aisle in 1823. The church has a small two manual organ. Pic by Jenny.

The church consists of a west tower, four-bay nave and aisles, chancel, and a north porch. The three stage tower was originally built in the early 15th century, but partly fell in the early 19th century and was probably reduced in height at that time. There is a battlemented parapet with crocketted pinnacles and gargoyles. It is decorated with Shields and panels of black flints. The nave has 13th century north and south arcades of four bays, with round piers and seat bases. There is a small perpendicular clerestory. There is a rood beam with a rood. The chancel has a finely decorated exterior east wall with checker patterns and three (empty) niches. There are also several mass dials. The chancel has a 15th century canopy over its piscina and sedilia. The north east end of the nave originally had a Chapel, There is a squint, a tomb slab from circa 1300 and a wall recess. In the centre of the chancel floor is a large brass to Sir William Calthorpe, died 1420. Burnham Thorpe is famous for being the birthplace of Lord Nelson, and he was baptised in the church. There are several references to him in the church. The lectern is made from a beam from HMS victory, given by Lords of the Admiralty in 1881. There is also a bust of Nelson and a Memorial for his father who was rector at the church and died in 1802. The church was renovated for the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1905. There is a Purbeck marble font dating from the 13th century with pointed arches on the faces. There is a small but fine organ which is currently the earliest survival by maker Samuel Street. Burnham Thorpe

The round tower is definitely Saxon in origin, approximately 950 years old, and has a triangular headed doorway on the first stage above the tower arch inside the church and is constructed with some large puddingstone material near the base inside. The thickness of the flint walls is less than that of a Norman builder. It has Saxon belfry windows constructed with flat flints set to make a round topped opening. The bottom one on the west face is a modern one made to match the others. The tower is capped with a lead roof but at one time would have been tiled. The base of the tower is 6 inches thicker up to a height of 10 feet. During the 1797 restoration the church was described as “the aspect of a gloomy moss grown cavern” being changed into “a decent place of public worship”. During this restoration the north aisle and south porch were demolished and the east window was opened up. The chancel floor was also raised at this time and new seats added. At the 1855 and 1898 restorations the north aisle was rebuilt and the Norman parts of the north doorway returned to their former position. The south porch was rebuilt and a vestry added. The present pews were installed in 1898. The chancel arch is from the Perpendicular period and the wrought iron screen and modern rood were added in 1932. Pic by Jenny.
