You don’t need to be a sailor to enjoy Boothbay Harbor, the “Boating Capital of New England.” With its beautiful deep port, Boothbay Harbor is a delight for sailors of all abilities. Explore its charming downtown and culinary shops for a delightful taste of Maine.

Experience Boothbay Harbor on a rolling deck, as locals have done for generations. Set out on the water to visit the hundreds of islands, promontories, coves and bays that dot the vicinity of Boothbay Harbor. Navigate to nearby Burnt Island Lighthouse or travel here by ferry from downtown Boothbay Harbor to chat with talented first-person narrators who will teach you about the history of the lighthouse and the family who lived there. For an authentic Maine experience, tour Cabbage Island and eat a lobster bake you will not forget.

Find numerous activities on land as well. Learn about sea creatures at the Maine State Aquarium. Touch sharks and rays, catch and release fish and discover more about the mighty lobster at this informative center that supports the state’s marine research efforts. Walk along nature paths of the Boothbay Region Land Trust, with hikes for walkers of all capabilities. End the day by celebrating the classic musical Carousel, which was filmed in the town,at the Carousel Music Theater, a dinner show put on by a cast of friendly students and professionals. Eat a lovely meal and tap your feet to a Rodgers & Hammerstein’s medley or a set of ‘60s classic songs.

The drive to Boothbay Harbor from the closest international airport in Portland, Maine takes about about 1.25 hours Take the train from Boston or Portland and rent a car in Brunswick for a scenic 45-minute drive down the peninsula to Boothbay Harbor. The town comes alive in the spring and summer. Visit in the winter for a cold and quiet but wonderful holiday experience.
