Absolutely the best place I’ve ever stayed. The staff went above and beyond on everything — check in, dinner (amazing), breakfast (huge variety all fresh), suggestions and tips for our travel, information about Iceland history, northern lights wake up call, to name a few. The cottage was cozy, clean and exquisite. Truly a one of a kind experience. Highly recommend.

Our stay at Torfhus Retreat was great. The location is perfect for exploring the Golden Circle – we could easily visit major sites without exhausting drives. The hospitality was warm and genuine, making us feel completely at home. One of our favorite surprises was the charming Icelandic horses at the fence from the neighboring farm – we got some wonderful photos of these beautiful creatures. The food was wonderful throughout our stay. Breakfast provided everything we needed to start our days of adventure, and the four-course dinners each evening were truly memorable. We can't recommend Torfhus Retreat highly enough for anyone planning to explore Iceland's Golden Circle.

This is a very comfortable and unusual place to stay: a modern version of an old turf house. Very quiet and peaceful place; excellent dinner available. My wife and I enjoyed it very much.

Lovely location. Wonderful main area and kitchen. Food was great! Hotel rooms (turf houses) are teeny - 1 bedroom house had nowhere to put luggage nor any cabinets to unpack. Bathroom had no place for toiletries. Minimal personal items such as no conditioner, no robes, no slippers. The advertised private thermal pools are actually shared with two other units. Since so little needed to be done to upgrade comfort, this could have been a 5-star experience, but didn’t quite feel that way.

Our stay at Torfhús was truly memorable. The reception and restaurant building is beautifully designed in the style of a traditional Viking home, with wood, turf, and fascinating artifacts throughout. Every detail felt thoughtful and immersive, especially the stunning couch crafted from an old fishing boat. The food was excellent throughout our stay. Breakfast was extensive and delicious, and I especially appreciated the care taken with allergies — during my visit they even removed coconut from the buffet to ensure my safety. Dinner each evening featured a different four-course menu with optional wine pairings, and every meal was beautifully presented. Our hús was equally impressive, with exceptional craftsmanship and thoughtful design. It included two bedrooms, a bath, and a full kitchen with appliances hidden behind elegant wooden paneling. The warm lighting and antique-style fixtures created a cozy, authentic atmosphere throughout. My only disappointment was the porch and private hot spring tub area, which felt too public and lacked privacy. Additionally, the tub temperature could have been hotter to make the experience more enjoyable. Overall, Torfhús is a truly special place — luxurious, atmospheric, and unlike anywhere else we have stayed.

This property is absolutely amazing. We stayed in a 2-bedroom cottage, which included a full kitchen and a private geothermal hot tub. Staff was superb. Breakfast, which is included, was excellent. Dinner, at an additional cost, was fantastic and some of the best meals we have ever had on vacation. I can not say enough good things about this property. Be advised that the nearest grocery store is around 20 minutes and closest town is 30-40 min. We found this property to be the perfect place to base our southern coast exploration. If you are looking for a place in this region, I highly recommend Torfhus Retreat. We will definitely be back to this special property.

Torfus Retreat is an unique luxury experience and a must stay during a trip to Iceland. The owners and entire staff are passionate about making your stay the absolute best. From the dining hall to the basalt soaking pools, the attention to detail throughout the property is fantastic. Jóhannes, the Retreat Manager, even helped us secure our Covid tests prior to leaving the country. Don't miss out on the dinner. We had the tasting menu - full of surprises, even for a vegetarian. So delicious. If you are looking for a centrally located accommodation in the Golden Circle, look no further. You are home!
