Situated in the grounds of Kerrow House, Birchwood Chalet is a striking and very cool Scandinavian A-Frame build. It’s set in woodland, near to the river and is essentially the perfect Highland holiday base. Kerrow House is a Georgian lodge dating back to circa 1770 that was originally built by Clan Chisholm as a hunting and fishing lodge. In the 19th century the house was extended by Lord Tweedmouth. Now Lord Tweedmouth may be a name that many people recognise, because he is reputed to be the first person to breed a litter of golden retrievers, arguably the world’s most popular breed. He crossed a Tweed water-spaniel with a yellow waxy-coated retriever and his work is commemorated by a statue in nearby Tomich.
Kerrow House entered private ownership in the middle of the 20th century and the celebrated Highland author Neil Gunn lived in the property for a number of years, writing his final three novels whilst at the house. The plot is dotted with many trees and leads to the River Glass which offers miles of bank for trout fishing. There are many decent pools along the Kerrow House stretch, that you are permitted to fish for free. Birchwood Chalet is set between the conservation village of Tomich and Cannich, so you’re in a spot referred to as the Gateway to Glen Affric which is well known as the most beautiful glen in Scotland. It’s an unspoilt wilderness with mountains, lochs, rivers and one of the best Caledonian pine forests in the country. You’re in a truly awesome place for a holiday.
For those keen walkers amongst you, being based at one of the Kerrow House properties, is the ideal place to be, especially if you want to bag some Munros. The Chisholme Bridge trailhead in Glen Affric is only a short drive away and from there you can summit five Munros. Further up the glen there’s a trailhead from Scotland’s most remote YHA that reaches a further three Munros. But it’s not just walking and fishing; It’s a great base to do more exploring of the Scottish Highlands.
Loch Ness is only twenty minutes’ drive away, and the NC500 is just beyond historic Beauly. Birchwood Chalet from spring 2022 will have had an upgrade, so accommodation is going to be fresh and exactly what you want from an upmarket cabin in the woods. On the ground floor there’s an open-plan kitchen/living/dining room with doors out to a private veranda. The view from the veranda is towards the River Glass and surrounding forest and mountains. The private hot tub is to the rear of the chalet in a secluded spot. The first floor of the chalet simply offers two bedrooms, a twin and a double. It’s a great place to stay for a short break or longer holiday.
