Welcome to Scuttlebutt Nautical Cottage!

Just one block from Taylor Creek and Beaufort’s scenic waterfront—and only a 10–15 minute stroll to the charming historic downtown—this rustic retreat offers both comfort and convenience. You’ll have easy access to the beauty of North Carolina's Crystal Coast, all while enjoying a cozy space filled with artwork and books from the original Scuttlebutt, a beloved bookstore and gift shop that was a Beaufort institution for over 30 years.

The cottage feels like Beaufort's old seafaring past, with its exposed beams, high ceilings, and original pine hardwood floors. It's warm and cozy, with a lived-in feel that makes you want to kick off your shoes and relax in peace.

Outside, you've got the best of both worlds. The expansive back deck comes with an electric BBQ and plenty of space for meals or just hanging out, while the front porch offers a more classic coastal experience with its swing and two rocking chairs, perfect for morning coffee or evening conversations.

Everything feels walkable and accessible from the cottage. Head right on Front Street toward downtown Beaufort and you'll pass some of the area's most gorgeous historic homes while enjoying beautiful views of Carrot Island, where wild horses roam free.

The Scuttlebutt Spirit

For 30 years, my parents Doreen and Jim owned and operated Scuttlebutt Nautical Books & Bounty, a beloved bookstore and gift shop in the heart of downtown Beaufort. When the business closed in 2022, we decided to carry on the Scuttlebutt spirit in our little home, and throughout the cottage, you'll find some of the same books, artwork, and nautical gifts that made the original Scuttlebutt so special.

Historical Note

The original building (now the family room with original wood burning stove) was built in Morehead City in 1910. Subsequently, it was moved to its present location in Beaufort and two additions were constructed: the present day eat-in kitchen and the middle structure with dinning room, baths and two bedrooms. Architecturally, you will notice the style differences between the family room and kitchen with vaulted ceilings, and the newer middle structure.

Birthday trip

We enjoyed our stay at Scuttlebutt. The only issues were the air conditioning couldn’t keep up with the 100 degree weather and the landscaping could use a good thinning out. Great location!

Going to Beaufort was a last minute decision. Rob responded to my questions right away. He hung with me until all the details were worked out. The house was quaint and the neighborhood was quiet. Much needed time away. Thank you so much Rob!

What you need to know about the Scuttlebutt House

We had a great time in Beaufort itself. However, the Scuttlebutt House wasn't up to our expectations - not up to standard. Needs shrubbery trimmed, cut down to ad to front and curb appeal. The house's furnishings were good, kitchen was well stocked and beds were very comfortable The floors had many places that a person could trip over and fall and be seriously injured. Need written instructions on how to operate the TV and thermostat. Not suitable for older adults and those with limited high tech knoweledge.

Just what the doctor ordered! Beaufort R & R Vacation

My wife and I very much enjoyed our our stay in Scuttlebutt Cottage. It wasn’t much to look at on the outside - but was beautifully decorated and comfortably furnished on the inside. Also, larger than first impression on the outside. We feel the exterior could stand to be painted, and the landscaping should be trimmed back to enhance the curb appeal. On the inside, the original hardwood floors are wonderful - but would be marvelous if they were refinished and restored. Most of our contact was with Heather. She was very responsive to our requests and questions. My wife and I needed a place to recover from surgery (me), and to recover from tax season (her - works for CPA). Scuttlebutt and Beaufort were “just what the doctor ordered!”
