Autun B&B: Best Autun Bed and Breakfast

Autun (Saône-et-Loire) La cathédrale Saint-Lazare. Autun fut le siège d'un évêché au plus tard à partir du IVe siècle. Le premier évêque d'Autun connu est saint Reticius (Rhétice), un catéchiste contemporain de l'empereur Constantin qui l'appellera d'ailleurs près de lui, à Rome. Ses livres sont perdus depuis le XIe siècle. Rhétice, était un gallo-romain de Bourgogne, il est mort à Autun en 334. Il repose, auprès de son épouse, aux abords de l'église Saint-Etienne et Saint-Pierre d'Autun. Saint Cassien sera son successeur. Cependant, la tradition rapporte qu'un saint Amator (Amâtre ou Amateur), aurait occupé le siège de l'épiscopat au IIIe siècle, vers 250. Un saint Martin ou saint Reverianus lui aurait succédé, avant saint Rhétice. L'évêque d'Autun avait le droit de porter le pallium en vertu d'un privilège accordé en 599 par le pape Grégoire le Grand. Le port du pallium, sorte d'écharpe blanche, ornée de croix noires, est réservé au pape, aux archevêques métropolitains (archevêques des provinces ecclésiastiques) et à quelques évêques. En 1788, Talleyrand deviendra évêque d'Autun. Il démissionnera en 1791. Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord avait été ordonné prêtre en 1779, il fut chargé des affaires du clergé en 1780 et évêque d'Autun le 2 novembre 1788 (consacré en janvier 1789). Charles-Maurice était fils aîné du comte Charles-Daniel de Talleyrand, lieutenant général des armées. Celui-ci, mourant, demanda au Roi, comme grâce suprême, de donner un évêché à Charles-Maurice. Louis XVI accéda à la demande de cet officier irréprochable. Le comte Charles-Daniel de Talleyrand décédera le lendemain de la nomination de son fils comme évêque d'Autun. Charles-Maurice n'a pas encore trente-cinq ans, il est riche, ami de Mirabeau et amant de Mme Adélaïde de Flahaut, athée et évêque; il devra beaucoup à l'Eglise. La cathédrale Saint-Lazare fut édifiée à partir de 1120, sur l'initiative de l'évêque Etienne de Bagé. Il s'agissait d'honorer les reliques de saint Lazare qui se trouvait dans la vielle cathédrale Saint-Nazaire qui remontait au Ve siècle (Cathédrale qui sera détruite au XVIIIe siècle). Les reliques furent transportées dans la nouvelle catrhédrale dès son achèvement en 1146. Les architectes s'inspirèrent de Cluny et Paray-le-Monial pour la construction. Le porche abrite le fameux tympan du "Jugement Dernier" sculpté par Gislebertus vers 1125-1135. La flèche date du XVe siècle, les chapelles gothiques sont du XVIe, et les deux tours romanes ont été refaites au XIXe siècle.

"When we arrived at the hotel my husband was not well with stomach problems.The receptionist was so helpful and kind and ordered a pizza for us to be delivered to the hôtel só we would not have to go out to eat.The restaurant in the hotel,is closed over the weekend. He was so kind in every way and we had a pleasant stay there…many thanks to his attitude towards us "

"Huge house, with a nice pool and an attentive host to sort problems. We had a lovely family holiday but a few issues need pointing out. The kitchen is very small for such a large house. It does need a sort out and a deep clean. The area around the pool is breaking up in places and is and a hazard with young kids running around. The positives far outweigh the negatives and I'm highlighting these points as areas to improve rather than complaints. "

"Front desk English skills were a bit limited, but the entire staff was exceptionally friendly, even in the midst of hosting a large Spain cultural event. Rooms in excellent shape. AC worked, even in a super heat wave, but we couldn’t figure out why they kept automatically turning off at midnight. Charming, walkable small town, with lots of live music. Awesome. "
