The best place to try traditional seafood dishes in the Bahamas is this vibrant beachfront entertainment precinct.

Those seeking an authentic Caribbean culinary experience need look no further than Arawak Cay, a popular waterfront entertainment precinct. Known to locals as the Fish Fry, Arawak Cay is a series of restaurants, bars and outdoor eateries recognised for traditional island food and a lively atmosphere. While incredibly popular with visitors to the island, Arawak Cay is far from touristy and is a great place to immerse in the nation’s rich culture. Spend a few hours here, entertained by the sounds, smells and sights. Try some new foods, sure to please anyone seeking gastronomic variety. Arawak Cay is a must for any visitor to Nassau.

The precinct began its life as a collection of beachfront shacks. While the buildings may be more substantial now, the atmosphere and legacy of the original stalls remain. Fried conch is the signature dish of the cay. Other seafood specialities include grilled lobster tails with a side of macaroni and cheese, or fragrantly spiced grilled shrimp. Local cocktails, like the gin-infused Sky Juice, are prepared with flair by talented bartenders. Sample the local beer, Kalik, or sit back with a coconut water, locally recommended when you’ve had a bit too much to drink.

Arawak Cay is most popular around lunch and dinner, when large crowds descend on the area. Arrive mid-afternoon to participate in a relaxed game of dominos with local residents or to enjoy a stroll through the precinct. Traditional junkanoo music and street performers are common in the area. Much of the food can be purchased to take out, so you can walk through the cay with a snack in hand as you observe the laid-back lifestyles of the local people.

Arawak Cay is located just a short walk from Nassau harbour. Those arriving by car will find street parking in the area. Arawak Cay is also served by bus.
