Experience the warm hospitality and pristine beauty of one of the world’s most undiscovered capital cities.
Relax at small, friendly cafés and enjoy a sweet fruit smoothie in Alofi while young humpback whales leap and dive not far from the shoreline during the nursing season. Swim in the tropical water or fish for tuna, wahoo and mahimahi.
Wander through this charming seafront town and you will find you quickly become acquainted with its people and businesses. Chat with the café staff while you sip a coffee or fruit shake. Look out over the sun-kissed reef to see fisherman at work in the early morning light. Just beyond them, the splashes and plumes of spray might be from the whales that come here to birth their young between July and September.
After breakfast head out on one of the charters that operate from the town. During these charters, look for the resident spinner dolphins and visit popular snorkelling spots. Get away from your worries while exploring the endless blue abyss of the Pacific Ocean and take a refreshing swim from the side of your boat. Specialised fishing tours also run from Alofi, with high probability of hooking a large mahimahi or wahoo. If you would rather stay on land, cast your line straight off the rocks and into the deep ocean out front.
As evening arrives, head to the town’s restaurants, all of which serve superb Niuean and European cuisine.
Alofi is located on the central western coast of Niue. The island has a supermarket and post office that sends letters internationally. The main summer season can be extremely hot and humid so visit between April and November when temperatures are comfortable and the water remains mild.
Hidden from the regular tourist trail, Niue on offers an island experience like no other.
