It started at the Check-In when they asked me to take a picture without giving me any explanation. The service rarely speaks any english. At breakfast, they stopped offering coffee way before the end of their breakfast time. The room was noisy and poorly serviced and cleaned. Their elevator system is pretty crooked. By the way it stopped at each floor it took me sometimes 15min from leaving my room until I left the hotel...
This stay was not as pleasant as planned. The room was big but not in good shape. Water stains at the wall, a leaky shower, stained carpet and the hardest bed I have ever slept in. The sound isolation of the windows was very little and since the hotel is in a lively area of the city, we had 'entertainment' all night.
The brekfast was okay. I tried the gym. They put the treadmill into a room with low ceilings... Meaning that if I would have run on it, I would bump my head each step...

Disliked: Staff & service
Poor service
Night shift front desk staffs were not so friendly and the bed is too hard that I hardly slept.
Stayed for 2 nights very handy to Shanghai Railway Station so easy to get to. Room relatively modern decor. Mattress on bed very hard almost too hard for a comfortable sleep. Had a few issues on arrival safe not functioning and bathroom like an ice box due to window not closing. Found out on the second day that the maintenance man can lock the window for you but for day one this information was too late. The desk supervisor on the day shift had a dismissive attitude she interrupted you whilst speaking and just wanted you gone. Breakfast was good with many choices of food available. Suggest waiters should clear away used dishes progressively rather than wait until you leave the table to do a big clean away. They weren't very busy the 2 mornings we were there so could easily do this. Suggest also some black tea bags made available in rooms for those not partial to green tea. Overall a fair to good rating would apply.
It was a very pleasant experience to stay at Zhong Xiang Hotel 中祥大酒店. The front desk staffs were very polite and helpful. The room is clean. I booked a standard single room that is little tight but comfortable still with fast speed Internet connection via WI-FI. It is within walking distance to Pu Shan tea market 普善毛家弄茶叶市场 where you can buy good quality tea with reasonable price after bargaining for 20-30% discount. There is a traditional market on Pu Shan Road. There are quite a few varieties for breakfast in the market and sounding area. I also visited the supermarket 联华超市 to pick up a few Chinese groceries (to bring back to US) on my way back to the hotel. This hotel is right next to the long distance bus station (长途汽车站) in North Square (北广场). It is close to MRT #3 and 4. If you need to take the Airport Express No. 5 bus to get to Pu Dong International Airport, you can take a taxi or motorcycle taxi for 20 RMB to get to the South Square 南广场 by Shanghai Railroad Station ( 上海火车站). The bus stop is in front of 友谊服装批发城 on 秣陵路.
Clean and relatively comfortable room. Breakfast buffet pretty good. Don't recommend the hotel restaurant for lunch or dinner.
We Had dinner in the hotel's restaurant one night. Surprised to see that there was no one else there and only two tables were set for dining with no napkins. Food was extremely salty and staff uninterested in taking care of the customers. They were on their phones the entire time.
Front door staff barely spoke English and wouldn't answer any questions or help with anything. We asked one of them to get us a taxi and he showed us the exit door to go outside and get it ourselves. Not a four star accommodation.

Liked: Cleanliness, room comfort
Commercial hotel
On checking in the desk staff were pleasant - only one spoke some English. I was given a key/card. I went up to the 17th floor to room 1710. I tried to find the slot to insert the card.......there wasn't one! I thought something was wrong so I went down to the desk. They sent a non-English speaking person with me who showed me that the card must be 'waved' in front of box and the door opened.
The card then had to be placed in a box next to door for lights to work.
It would have been much more efficient if I - being a new client - was taken up to my room and shown how things worked!
Room was clean; businesslike.
In the morning I wanted to take a shower............no hot water! I moved lever to the right and left.....leaving in left position for a few minutes.........no hot water.........then right position......colder!
Basin had hot water.
On leaving to go out I advised the desk of the above! They said they would fix it............they didn't! Second and last morning..........no hot water.
No, I would not stay there again.
Sincerely,
Paul S. Lewis
Stayed here for a couple of days on arrival in Shanghai and were quite happy with it so booked a couple more nights on returning to shanghai. Outside looks a little jaded but the inside is bright and clean and so were the rooms and restaurant. Lovely views from rooms and public square in front hosts an assortment of Chinese activities which are great to watch even if you don't want to join in. Are was safe and always a police presence, no trouble. People friendly, breakfast plentiful if a little weird, but remember it is Chinese, although they do toast and cereal as well (warm milk though). Nice extra touches in room such as slippers, combs and toothbrushes all new and sealed.
