I signed up for the Baolong Homelike a little nervous about whether I would be able to find it, since three different mapping software sites placed it in three different locations. This site's map is also incorrect. To get there from the airport, I took the Maglev to Longyang Road Station, Subway Line 2 to People's Square, then transferred to Line 1. Per another customer's review, I got off the Zhongshan Road subway station (just after the Shanghai Railway Station) and immediately recognized the elevated roadway just to the north. I turned left (west) and walked about ten minutes toting my carry-on, a loaded camera bag, and dragging my big check-in bag on the north side of the road. At that point I asked 2 policemen for directions, showing them the name of the hotel and its address printed in Chinese. They pointed me to a location off Zhongshan Road, which I knew was not right, but they did follow me, wanting to make sure I got to my destination. About 100 meters further, I recognized the hotel from pictures on other sites, particularly the vertical name sign and the many A/C units protruding from the windows. The following day, I examined the location and can describe it as three buildings east from the large intersection of Zhongshan Road and Hutai Lu (Road) on the north side of the road, adjacent to the elevated road. Most maps don't show Zhongshan Road. Instead they identify the Inner Ring Elevated Road which is above Zhongshan Road. Hope that helps.
Check-in was facilitated by the one staff member who knew some English. Having had no travel experience in China, I was surprised at the request for a cash deposit which took about half of all I had since I had only exchanged about $50 at the airport. I climbed the six floors to my room on the back side of the hotel (there is an elevator) and tried all the lights but none worked. Went down to the desk and they came up with me and told me now to insert my room key in the slot by the door to turn on the electricity to the room. Beyond that, the only trouble was a toilet I managed to plug up. I drew a picture of a plunger for the desk staff and they came to help me within 10 minutes. For any questions I had when the English-speaking woman was not present, they would call someone who spoke English and I could direct questions to them.
The bed was firm by US standards, there being a single mattress set on a wooden frame. I am told this is the preferred firmness in China for the elderly anyway, (it promotes healthy sleep patterns) and I slept very well using both pillows under my head. There was no soaking tub in my least-expensive room - only a shower. There was a liquid soap dispenser in there which I used also for shampoo. Toothbrushes and paste were provided. The "washcloth" was a larger size cloth that we might call a hand towel in the US. The hot water in the shower was with the handle to the right, the hot water in the sink was on the left. Try both sides before complaining about no hot water.
The surrounding area: Chestnut vendors abounded at the Zhongshan Station. Just kitty-corner across the Hutai Road intersection was a convenience store where I picked up some bottled water. The area to the north of the hotel is the poor area of town. Though Shanghai is very safe, it might be avoided at night.
The following morning, I checked out early, received back my deposit, and decided to walk to the Shanghai Train Station following the Hutai Road heading southeast. I clocked 13 minutes to the railway station, dragging my luggage (I walk fast) and a couple more minutes through the station to the south side where the subway could be picked up. It is probably not quite two kilometers. Taxis are readily available as well on the Zhongshan Road and a bus station is close to the hotel if you are comfortable getting around that way. I managed a brief stop at the People's Square and the Pearl Tower before heading out to the Airport again for my next flight.
I would recommend this hotel. The staff are very courteous and aim to please. I chose this hotel not only for the economy, but to experience for myself a hotel that the locals might use. Though I did not eat at the restaurant on site, it looked clean and appealing. Since no one knows where it is, if you take a taxi, draw a simple map for the driver of the Hutai Road/Zhongshan intersection with three buildings to the east. It may also help to show him a picture of the hotel which you can find on other sites. For my only night in Shanghai, I was very pleased.
