“Loved IT!”
Beautifully positioned for great views, friendly and helpful staff, great location for being a tourist, this hotel offers large rooms and big bathrooms with comfortable furnishings. I would stay there again in a minute! I was very pleased with the hotel and we stayed there during the San Sebastian Film Festival, which was just icing on the cake. Had a really fun time!
“WOW!”
The hotel and the town of San Sebastian are stunning! Our stay was comfortable and fun. The old section and waterfront are just a few minutes walk. The hotel staff was exceptionally helpful, with everything from dinner recommendations and reservations to parking the rental car. On our way out to visit the beach, the concierge, without us even asking, made sure we had beach towels. Everything about our stay - the hotel, the staff, the city of San Sebastian - was beautiful.
“5 star look, but 4 star overall”
Many have pointed out that this hotel is not a true 5 star and I would agree. It has a 5 star look because of the grand architecture, but needs sprucing up. The hotel staff was extremely professional and helpful. The lobby area was nicely appointed and the location is excellent, right in the midst of the old town and a few blocks from the ocean. However the rooms and hallway could use a touch up, as others have indicated. Also, because this hotel is several blocks from the ocean, you can see the ocean but do not get the impact of a true "sea view", which they describe for some rooms. However, the hotel is in front of a small river, which has greenish water and is not that attractive. The spa is in the basement and very disappointing.... almost like an afterthought. I expected more from the premier 5 star in town. The Spa is more like a day spa where they have contracted out to let someone run it. It is small and not very luxurious. Also, toiletries were not in keeping with a 5 star. Next time I will stay at one of the 4 star hotels on the ocean. The Maria Cristina is nice, but to me not worth the price given no sea view, elementary spa, and rooms that need a bit of renovation.
“Great Location”
Great location and service.
“Excelente location.”
Nice place to stay, a little old but resaonably well maintaineed. Parcking facilities.
“Nice but overpriced”
The hotel is nice, the staff was very friendly and helpful, but the hotel is a little tired, so I thought it was overpriced.
“Already Planning Next Trip”
The Maria Cristina lives up to everything and more as advertised. A wonderful historic and stylish hotel ....right down to the 4 seasonal portraits of Maria on the wall of my fantastic room with a view of the Atlantic. Stayed overnight this time on my way to Pamplona, but I am already planning my next trip to the Bull Run with a much longer stay at the Maria Cristina built in.
“Excellent Hotel, but it is too expensive”
I know, my rating and recommendation are in conflict. The hotel is set in a renovated magnificent old building within a 10-minute walk of the beautiful "Old Town" and beach promenade. Staff is fantastic and very friendly. The rooms are wonderful: big, airy, clean, and modern. Great bathrooms. Almost perfect, except I felt it was way too expensive for San Sebastian. It is priced like a top hotel in New York or Shanghai. If you still want to splurge, make sure you get breakfast in your rate. Otherwise they charge you the most expensive breakfast I have ever seen per each person in your party, including small children. I would not stay here again.
