Inverclyde’s main town, Greenock, thrived during the shipbuilding era. Today it is a terminal for transatlantic cruise ships. Adjacent Gourock was the prime seaside resort for Glaswegians from the 1890s to the 1950s (a heated outdoor pool from this time remains) but is now residential. The Argyll Hills, superb walking country, form a spectacular backdrop. Glasgow lies 25 miles east; Loch Lomond is 29 miles north.
