Eilenriede is an enormous urban park of leafy forest terrain stretching across a large portion of Hannover. It comprises 1,600 acres (640 hectares) of trees, ponds, pathways and intriguing structures. Bring snacks and drinks for a picnic with your family amid the tranquility of this natural oasis.
Cycle along the many paths of these scenic woods and forget the city as you listen to the calls of the wildlife and enjoy the fresh air in this “green lung.” See the trees and plants blossom in spring and summer and find an open lawn for sunbathing. Relax with a book on one of the hundreds of benches that decorate the labyrinth of paths. The forest adopts a cozy, enchanting atmosphere when all is white with snow in winter.
Encounter the lakes and capture photos of the spectacular terrain. Enjoy the quaint ambiance in a forest inn. Spot deer, foxes, rabbits and bats in this biodiverse plot of land. The dexterous among your group may enjoy the challenges offered by the Spielpark Wakitu high-ropes course and the skating area. Stop at one of the cafés and kiosks for snacks and beverages.
Among the highlights is the Erlebnis Zoo Hannover, where you can watch animal feedings and dine at a restaurant beside a rhino enclosure. See chimpanzees, polar bears, tigers and elephants in the various themed worlds that make up this fun spot for kids.
As one of the largest urban forests in Europe, the park presents a spectacular view from above. Note how photos show a vast clump of green surrounded on its outer edges by the red-tiled rooftops of Hannover. Consider that it is larger than London’s Hyde Park, Paris’ Bois de Bologne and New York’s Central Park.
Eilenriede occupies a vast part of eastern Hannover, from the southern to the northern limits of the city. Ride a bus from the city center for about 5 minutes to the Emmichplatz stop near the arched entrance to the forest. It is open every day until late evening.
