Situated 9 kilometres from the English Channel, Bayeux survived the Battle of Normandy largely intact, retaining the look of a traditional Normandy town. Its most famous attraction is the Bayeux tapestry, a 70-metre embroidered length of cloth depicting the 1066 Norman conquest of England. The tapestry, listed on UNESCOs Memory of the World Register, is displayed in a museum in the town centre.
