Diggers pan in the creek, women in Victorian dress stroll down Main Street, and equipment clangs in an underground mine shaft – the spirit of the Gold Rush is alive and well at Sovereign Hill. Step back in time in historic Ballarat, soaking up the drama and excitement of the 1850s gold frenzy.

Actors in period costume and streets lined with authentic, 1850s buildings greet you as you arrive in the historic gold town of Sovereign Hill. Chat with shopkeepers, craftspeople and soldiers as you explore what life was truly like in this bustling pioneer township. A blacksmith pumps the bellows to fire his furnace, horse-drawn carriages clatter down the street, and 19th-century printing presses whir at the offices of the Ballarat Times.

Finally, get in on the gold-seeking action as you grab a pan and try your luck – the creek at Poverty Point is filled with real gold. Climb to the top of the Poppet Head platform to look out over the mines, descend down into the shaft, and watch as a steam-powered battery crushes quartz to extract gold.

Before you leave, head to the Confectionery Shop for a sugary boiled lolly – a traditional 1850s recipe made at a factory in town. It's the perfect antidote to the heady effects of gold rush fever.
