Description

A heady mix of the old and new, Athens – Greece's vibrant capital city – offers plenty to explore. On this small-group guided tour, visit the impressive archaeological site and museum of the Acropolis, discover the wonders of the Ancient Agora and don't miss the Panathinaiko Olympic stadium.

Begin with a drive to Syntagma Square in the city centre. Admire the neo-classical buildings of the National Library, pass by the Greek Old Parliament and watch the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Walk through the city to the massive remaining columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus and explore the majestic marble stadium that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 – Panathinaiko Stadium.

At the Acropolis Museum, immerse yourself in history and art that dates back thousands of years. Prehistoric antiquities, fine marble sculptures and ancient everyday objects are on display in these spacious halls. Continue to the Acropolis itself to take in breathtaking views over the city. Weave in and out of temples built long ago, including the Propylae and the famous Parthenon, following in the footsteps of great Greek thinkers.

Your last stop is at the Ancient Agora, a cluster of ruins that was once a hub of public activity. Pass the bare marble of Mars Hill and the democratic gathering place at Pnyx Hill. Admire the gallery of the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos and the well-preserved Hephaestus Temple, which still stands as it did when first built in the 5th century.
