Get a killer workout and earn some dazzling views from the summit on this guided hike up the Sleeping Giant. Hear the legend behind the hulking nickname of Nounou Mountain as you clamber up steep switchbacks on the ascent, and then catch your breath as you take in views of the entire eastern coastline of Kauai.

Get picked up from your hotel or meet your guide in Koloa and set off to reach the trailhead. Grab your gear, load up your snacks, and start trekking, getting your heart rate up as you tackle the steady incline on the way up. Resembling a large man sleeping on his back, Nounou Mountain has a whole host of myths and legends to its name.

Tackle the steep switchbacks as you make your way up through the forest, clocking about 1,000 vertical feet (305 m) on the 2-mile (3-km) trail, and then emerge out of the lush vegetation onto the face of the Sleeping Giant. Find a spot at one of the picnic tables to relax and picnic if you packed a lunch, and gaze out at sweeping views of massive, waterfall-striped Mount Waialeale and the Wailua Homesteads.
