Description

Spend a day exploring a breathtaking active volcano and learning about the coffee-farming industry that thrives on its fertile slopes. Trek to a viewpoint overlooking the cloud forests and aquamarine lake in the crater of Poás Volcano, and then sip coffee at a century-old plantation.

At Poás Volcano National Park, look down into the blackened lunar landscape from the 8,885-foot (2,708 m) crater summit. As the billowing smoke and steam dissipate over the fumaroles and sulphuric lake at its centre, watch for erupting geysers – they've been known to shoot up to 820 feet (250 m) into the sky.

Make your way down the fertile volcanic slopes to the Doka Estate, where the Vargas family has been growing and harvesting coffee for 3 generations. Learn about coffee from bean to cup as you visit the farm and its historic 93-year-old coffee mill. Discover the roasting process at the Café Tres Generaciones to sample the plantation's blends – they have 8 that range from smooth to bold, including organic and decaf varieties.

Sit down to enjoy a delicious lunch of regional Costa Rican specialities, and then hop back on the bus to make your way to Jaco
